Guys, here is a strange artifact I stumbled upon....
a couple weeks ago I bought an alien egg from a guy who claimed this thing is an actual studio prop made in 1978 for the movie ALIEN.

So slightly curious of it's origins I went ahead and bought it.
I paid a one-er quid.
I asked him where he got this thing, and he only replied "it came from a private collection from Los Angeles.." ..So about a week ago I e-mailed him inquiring about this egg after I received it, . I explained to him that ALIEN was an almost purely British product, and that I just wanted to know if possible how this egg ended up in Los Angeles. This guy then responded that it came from a private collection of a gentleman who had been a prop-maker and collector through the 60's and 70's. This person will not tell me where it came from. so as much as I want to establish the authenticity of this thing..I cannot. Sad

So here is the egg... It appears very old, some chipped paint. I think it is made of some type of gypsum plaster with a greenish/black finish. It would be totally awesome if it was not chipped up....but then maybe the chips on the surface add character...

Many of the films props were shipped to Bob Burn's house in CA after the hollywood premier, and many of them still reside at his house. As we know some of it was stolen from his house as well. Not much of it stayed in the UK.

I also think only lifesize eggs were produced for A L I E N since the only scene where you can see tiny eggs (Kane's descending in the egg chamber) was made using a matte painting...

So if this egg isn't life-size, I'm afraid it's not an original A L I E N prop...

If my memory serves me well, some eggs were made out of plaster for the scene in ALIENS (when Ripley confronts the Queen and burn the whole egg-chamber)...would it be one of those?

Looks great.

You might be right joberg...

This egg is about 3 1/2-4 inches tall maybe, (about the size of a grapefruit?) and very heavy plaster. I will bet it actually came from ALIENS. The only alien small production prop eggs I saw were the ones with Giger playing with the small set mockup he made. So now I suppose will find out how to contact this guy Bob and ask him if he is missing an egg, cos now I have a feeling it could be stolen as the seller would not tell me exactly where it came from. This kind of irks me...

Here's Bob's website. Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

I can see why you thought it was worth a punt JTP.

Similar story behind a clay pipe I bought that the seller claimed had been taken from the set of BR where he/she worked as a caterer during the films production. There was obviously no way of authenticating the thing but I got it for £7 and it is exactly the same kind as the one smoked by the Cambodian lady's assistant.
I think that if a seller displays a certain level of ignorance/innocence about an item whilst not seeming to be too bothered about making a great deal of money from it, then their story just might be true. Who knows?

Thanks for the input guys, I did find another egg looks very similar to mine from ALIENS
the paint looks the same.Someone on yourprops site has it as a 1986 "ALIENS" egg.
there is another one the guy is referring to as burned on one side. also similar to this one..

The other similar egg I found:

...Or another possibility might be that these little plaster eggs were part of that mock-up of the egg chamber that's used in ALIEN...you can see Giger playing with it in the behind the scene DVD. Just a thought...

Thanks joberg. I remember seeing that also, but I have searched everywhere and cannot find a picture of that.

I finally figured this one out...

for $100 I actually got a partially scorched egg from "Aliens"

The seller was told it was from "ALIEN" but after many emails and pictures to other collectors, I finally found the origin of this thing. There were fiberglass and plaster eggs exactly this size in 'ALIENS" and although I was wondering why one side of my egg looked blacked, I was told there is a scene where Weaver takes a flame thrower and wipes out a bunch of these eggs (I do not remember this scene) but in any case it is definitely authentic... unfortunately from the wrong movie Sad. But I do not blame the person I bought it from, they were just mis informed.

Well JTP, I'm sure that with more research you'll find exactly the provenance of that egg if only to confirm that you have an original object from Aliens...if so, congratulations are in order Cool
