Looks fantastic! Thanks for the list of stuff you used for that project...I think people who don't scratch-build have no idea of the amount of material a prop/model used to achieve the final product. Keep up the good work Joseph |

THanks guys! Yeah it was a "killer" you were right JB! I will be working again through the night tonight just finalizing and laying down sealant over the model.... the trick is to protect this original and the molds themselves. I am glad you like it David! I will mold this beast tomorrow and Sunday.. The base and JB's Airlock will get molded at the same time.... I guess we are all addicted to the modeling stuff!!! _________________ ______________________________________

Molding the ship now guys... multiple coats of silicon in a two part mold with rigid mother-mold.... Been at this since early morning...yikes this is one complex shape!

David, we can breathe a sigh of collective relief.... Your model survived perfectly, not even a chip of primer pulled...... and a beautiful set of molds.... step aside..I am going to do a few back-flips ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!

I don't know how you are going to cast these , but could I suggest slush moulding resin ( to give you the detail) whilst laying up with cotton tissue ( used like fiberglass matting ) this method allows you the flexibility to hollow cast the model to a measured thickness, just by adding additional layers of tissue allowing you to ensure that the model has strength, but at points or areas it can be thinner especially if it's going to have a lighting rig installed . And you don't get the pain and irritation of glassfibre, especially if you're alergic like me ! I think you've done a fabulous job - now I'm torn between getting a derelict or an APC .... oh ... woe is me ! |

I am glad you like it guys! The molds took much longer than I thought...I thought two full days...actually they took 5 days....yikes.... I am doing the first model tonight for Lanboy, and also assembling Bassnoirs original tonight... The skin of the ship is laid up slush molded with a very slow setting smoothcast 327 resin...Then an extremely rigid resin foam goes inside... it is an involved process..but it will be worth it. I can probably make 2-3 a week in spare time.. _________________ ______________________________________

Well Guys I made the first cast of the derelict, and it exceeded my wildest expectations. 99.9% perfect... no seams, no bubbles, the integrated clear dome came out flawless, and I could not be happier. The model is cast in translucent amber resin with a rigid resin-foam core. I am not tinting the resin because even a bit of tint can degrade the resin quality, and I am using smooth-cast 327 resin, so I lightly pre-prime the parts so you can see the details.
This is Lanboys derelict right next to Bassnoirs. virtually identical, and I will be assembling these this weekend and going over paint colors.. I am thinking blue, mottled dark grays and blacks, hints of burgundy and bronzish corrosion....

Thank U much JB!!!!!! (the airlock is next )
Here are two derelicts fully assembled, ready for finishing and paint....
Bassnoir's original is in the striped primer gray and Lanboy's is in the foreground....I am really looking forward to painting these beasts. The sound modules are ready to install and loaded with the 20 second warning signal. I was really surprised how the circular shape of the base magnified and cleared up the sound effect!!!!!!

Now I am doing both John and Davids together. I have them 50% done painting .. They will be identical.
Base coats of two colors of automotive paint...a lot of staining, hand brushing... a little corrosion effects... They will be finished tomorrow PM.... Will post both together
...
Here is a preview... you will have to guess if this is the original or a copy (evil laugh)
