OK. So. Gold Blasters. I know they are out there.
While I was writing the Blade Runner Fan Film I decided to include a gold blaster in the film. The blaster was only to be seen once, moving from a characters holster onto a counter, then it would be collected by a blade runner.
As luck would have it we never filmed that scene. So the blaster looked like this for a long time.
To go back some, this was part of a group buy I made of solid resin blasters several years ago. It included a Marco, three accurate copies that were much smaller than the rest, and very rough castings at that, and broken. It also had a PKD recast in it, and this one, which lacked a lot of detail, and needed some serious TLC.
Along the way I decided this one would be the mighty gold "Butch Malone" blaster. Yes I know the characters name was cheesy, but his name was never spoken in the film.
Now, the character is a street thug, but a classy street thug. He's a pimp, but not an overly flashy pimp. He wasn't drowning in gold.
I really dig the twin 45's they gave Castor Troy in Face Off and have been looking to bring that idea into BR gun design.
I also knew the gun was going to have Kanji inlaid into it, so I started finidng characters for "power" "death" and "end".
Then, I busted out the dremel and went to work.
And in the end, this only ended up being a holster gun. But recently I started working on it again and this is where she stands today.
I wanted a gold on black finish. I'm still very much not happy with this and do plan one more repaint. I also have to mill out a new "pointer" for the side. In the meantime, as a joke, I'm using this as the pointer.
And it's actually growing on me a bit.
Here is the Kanji that reads "END"
Here are some full shots. Ultimately I wanted a custom blaster with custom parts. My thinking was that Butch probably "aquired" a patrol issue blaster and brough it to his gunsmith and said "Trick it out".
Damn, this was a long post.

Very cool! Kind of reminds me of something out of the 1996 (Danes/DiCaprio) version of Romeo and Juliet. _________________ www.propsummit.com

Noeland cool idea. have you ever tried gold leaf? it is pretty inexpensive and if done right can look pretty cool. Alclad might work better though. |

Yeah, I'd love to see some pictures of your gold blasters. I've some pics of the doppleganger on the rpf (and it was partially the inspiration for this one) but I'd love to see more!
Andy, I have tried working with goldleaf for things other than props. This is my first gold prop gun though, so it never really occured to me. I'll have to experiment with it!!
The Alclad chrome is something I am interested in using, so I will also research the gold. Is it the same kind of thing as the chrome, where you are laying down a layer of black first?

The guns, camera and light studio are feet away from me all day. if i can ever get this ice sculpt that is not an ice sculpt finished for Cabin Fever 2, I get some better images. This production is run by some of the least experienced people I have ever dealt with. |
