This might be old news, but I just came across an article in this week's copy of Entertainment Weekly that shooting of the remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell starts in late May. This remake is supposed to be closer to the original PKD short novel We Can Remember It For You Wholesale.

They don't have a link for the current article, but here's a couple of others that may be of interest, and you can always Google it to find out more:

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) was in talks to play the villain:

Does it count as a "Remake" if they are going back to the original source material, and basically ignoring what the previous movie had done? Sounds interesting, but I do agree that PKD has a ton of great short stories (and a few books) that would also be great adapted, as pure golden age sci-fi stories. Still, as fun as the first film was, I was disappointed with it as a science-fiction film. It was on the edge of being a schlocky 'B' film...actually it was over the edge, but just had a bigger budget.

"Total Recall rehash – exit Martians, enter Jessica Biel
Hollywood Can Re-imagine It for You Wholesale
By Lester Haines • Posted in Entertainment, 27th May 2011 06:00 GMT

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/05/27/totall_recall/

Those film fans among you who were sitting in darkened rooms, trembling at the prospect of Hollywood's re-imagining of Paul Verhoeven's 1990 sci-fi romp Total Recall, should rest assured that things look promising for the latest interpretation of Philip K Dick's We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.

First up, Arnold Schwarzenegger has been replaced by Colin Farrell in the role of Douglas Quaid, meaning female leads Jessica Biel and Kate Beckinsale can concentrate on their acting, rather than protecting their shapely backsides from the ex-Governator.

Secondly, the rehash "ditches the Martian storyline from the original pic and instead involves nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai", the Hollywood Reporter explains.

Brit thesp Bill Nighy is in the frame to play resistance leader "Quatto", which will go down well with the gaunt teen demographic, since the actor has "made a name in the geek community playing a vampire ruler in the Underworld movies".

Helmsman Len Wiseman, also of Underworld pedigree, takes responsibility for ensuring that New Shanghai factory worker Quaid's quest to determine whether or not he's a spy, and if so for which side, trumps the cinematic original.

The totally recalled Total Recall starts shooting in June in Toronto. ®"

I figure if it's got both Jessica Biel AND Kate Beckinsale in it, it can't be all bad. - scoff

P.S. The casting of Biel, Beckinsale and Nighy are all unsubstantiated - checking with IMDB Biel & Beckinsale are rumoured to be part of the cast and Nighy is nowhere to be found.

From the news you linked here, it looks like it's going to be some kind of "Blade Runner remake in disguise"...
