A thread devoted to these great costumes, designed (like the A L I E N EVA suits) by John Mollo.

Go on, share your photos, data and thoughts here !

As we have said before, since the movie came right after Alien and that a lot of guys working on that iconic film went directly (or indirectly)to work on Outland, the decor, costumes and model work are within the same kind of design. As a matter of fact, I would've prefered that Outland be first, followed by Alien in terms of design and "possible world" Wink

Thanks for sharing Fred.

In terms of overall design, Outland seems like a "prequel" of Alien (my taste here)...when you see the mining towers and the Nostromo refinery they are very similar as well as the helmet of the mine workers could've been a model manufactured by Yutani Corp for sure.
The funny part is also that if you compare the two directors (Hyams is American and Ridley English) you have a similar type of actions: crew stuck in a mining facility, crew stuck in a space ship, sets, props and models built by the same crew used in both films just years apart, a mix of American and English actors added to the movie and voila: some kind of continuity..I hope I'm clearer then before

Oh, OK JB, I understand now !

I'd prefer to envision Outland exactly at the same time period as A L I E N. The mineral ore the refinery is bringing back to Earth in A L I E N could come from a remote mining facility like the one shown in Outland...

It would make sense...

I can see joberg's point... For sure they are in the same universe, but I would think Outland is a little before due to the travel time needed from Jupiter Station to Earth being one year. In Alien to get all the way back from Zeta-II Reticuli was 10 months (plus six weeks in the script to get back on course). That would require FTL capability and Zeta-II Reticuli is in it's own local group. orbiting in the Orion arm (as is Earth) of the Milky Way galaxy.

Now an accurate thing they did in ALIEN was refer the Antarctic traffic control. This is 100% correct because the constellation Reticulum is located in the far southern hemisphere, and would need the Antarctic continent as a base of communications for the Nostromo to be in constant contact with Earth

Back on topic Wink - you probably all realise that the suits, or at least the hardware parts, were reused for the deep salvage team at the beginning of Aliens ("There goes our salvage, guys").

I believe the helmets and backpacks were vacuum-formed by Andrew Ainsworth. Some of you may have heard of him. Rolling Eyes

I dread to think how many batteries each helmet required, with all those light bulbs and the two lamps at the side!

Damn, I didn't know that !

Shocked

(must admit though that it's been a looooooong time since I saw this one... Definitely not one of my favorites)

Did you also noticed on the first photo I posted here that the second guy from the right, Spota, is wearing the spacesuit he'll later die in ! All the spacesuits were red, blue or yellow, only the zero-G jail versions were cream / white with a padded chest area... and that's the one he's wearing to go to work ???

Shocked

Fred

PS : The only other white spacesuit I noted was the one worn by Sean Connery at the end of the film...

Is that particular screen cap in the movie? Is that the part at the beginning, or just a screen test? I can't tell. I did not notice that was Spota....

Actually Spota was employed directly by Sheppard for the Leisure section, so probably he would never go out mining is a suit like that...

Damn JT, I re-watched the first minutes of the film and you're right... it probably was a promo and/or test photo !

Here is what the scene looks like in the film... I can't spot Spota (hehe) anymore !

Damn Fred, those are some great grabs.. what a cool looking suit and helmet...

looks perfect for Io's low pressure atmosphere.. The dust blowing in from the airlock is very accurate as well.. Io has a ton of activity from Jupiter's tidal gravitation forces and Volcanism, tons of dust,/sulphur everywhere...

The suit looks like it has a g-suit type suit underneath and the heavy outersuit over it.. very cool.

Hmm, I should probably rephrase my earlier statement about Aliens.

Here is one of the 'salvage guys' from the beginning of the film. You can see the distinctive chest buckle... but that's about all!

I don't think the suit is the same, and I simply can't see what's on their backs, so... I'll change my story to 'they have the same buckle on the front'. Anything else is speculation at this point. Embarassed

It probably isn't even one of the original pieces! I suspect that places like Pinewood (where both were filmed) keep a 'library' of wooden forms which can be vacuum-formed as and when needed.
