|
|
This thread is to document my build of the fine Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun kit from Nicksdad.
For this project, I will be adding a Blaster Core v3 from Plecter Labs to provide the lights and sound effects desired. The BCv3 will be powered by dual 14450 Li-Ion batteries. I have not decided which LED I will use for the barrel flash effects at this time. I am leaning toward a Luxeon or Cree 3-watt Blue running at 700mA. I may also add small LEDs to simulate the TV version power settings. Not sure about that yet.
Here is the kit from Nicksdad...
When I received the kit, I was worried. The box looked like Ace Ventura had gotten ahold of it. It was beat up pretty bad, thanks USPS! But it was well packaged and all parts were bubble wrapped.
So I lay everything out and start thinking about where to place everything.
I wanted to possibly put the batteries in the rear gas chamber but after further observations, the required number of cells will not fit. Short of having a battery custom made, they have to go someplace else. Looking at the hand grips, with some minor modification, both the batteries and BC will fit in this area. With some minor drilling, a recharge port could also be added.
After modifying the hand grips, the only things left to do is solder the connections and program the BC.

I finished installing and connecting the speaker and trigger to the Blaster Core. I haven't installed the primary LED yet. The only spare that I have is a yellow luxeon 1-watt. The test video is below.

As for the recharge port, I was thinking the same thing. Put it in the gas chamber, unscrew the cap to recharge. I have a couple of them from previous builds but I need to put a new one inside. I'll order one along with the LED.

Update: Everything except for the primary LED is connected. All other stuff is hot melt glued into place. The small microswitch you see to the right of the trigger is for accessing the main menu and selecting different sound banks. I have created the sound files from original Logan's Run movie clips.

Update: Sound files are done and loaded. Video is going up on Vimeo now. Took me a while to get the sound fonts set. I assumed the config file was default and it was throwing me a curve ball by not playing my sound files. Anyhoo, Erv suggested I check it and sure enough, setting were wrong.. Oooppsss. Check that config file!

Next action - Install the LED and paint that puppy. _________________ -Del

OK, I could not wait for the LED to arrive so I installed a white Cree LED. I'll replace it later. Made a goofy video and uploaded to Vimeo.
It should be ready for viewing once they finish encoding it to their format. My camera takes .MTS videos.

I think I'm ready to paint this puppy. _________________ -Del |

Here we go...
As you can see, the side resin panels seem to have that hammered metal look. Probably due to surface contaminants. I'm planning on replacing the side panels with aluminum plate so that the holster hook is stronger. The flame cone was left unpainted to reflect the strobe of the LED. The picture does not do the strobe effect justice, it is extremely bright and left me seeing spots. This is from a 1 watt LED. I'm planning on putting a P7 900-lumen LED in it's place. I have that LED already and it's blinding bright. I also plan to replace the range selection micro-switch with a long button version so I don't have to use a pin to change the sound banks.
Some additional touch-up here and there and she's all done. _________________ -Del |

Update - I am replacing the resin side panels with aluminum. Here are some pics.
I have started weathering the DSB. In the end, it will have a dull black finish with use wear on edges and what not.. The aluminum plate is .190 thick (slightly more than the resin sides). I was afraid that if I use it with a holster, it might break the screws through the resin. It took about 4 hours to cut and file the side plates to perfection. Many many test fits.. Update - Final Pic (weathered/used look)
Note: I did away with the battery terminal plug that appears on most DSFGs. Instead, I put the range selection button at the thumb position. This is also how you reload in the event the blaster runs out of power. And as usual with Plecter boards, this allows access to the Blaster Core configuration menu.
With the addition of the aluminum side panels, the DSFG feels like a real weapon. The weight is just right.
Thanks to everyone who commented. I enjoyed working on this project. :thumbsup _________________ -Del |

Getting ready for (2) more builds...
New aluminum side plates (rough cut) ready for final fitting on more of Nicksdad's LRDS guns.
I like to mate them to the gun frames for a perfect fit. _________________ -Del |

Final interior of the display.
Final interior of the display with glass front in place. Only thing to do now is paint the exterior and either hing the front or use some other method to make it open-able.

The MkII build is complete. All that is left is paint.. Here is a video of the 2.1mm LEDs being tested.

I was going to use 3mm barrel LEDs but after putting them in a spare piece of aluminum, I decided to go smaller with 2.1mm gull-wing LEDs. Routing the aluminum side plate and wiring everything up was tedious to say the least. The MkII side plates were hand fabricated as well. _________________ -Del |
