|
|
Hi everyone, I'm a new member here so apologies if this has been covered before or results in a giant collective 'meh'.
You're no doubt all aware of this star map from the bridge of the Nostromo:
Well luckily I managed to track this down on eBay - hey presto, my own Nostromo star chart
For your info it's a 'Phillips Chart of the Stars' from around 1960...I'm not sure but it looks like the prop department maybe made a transparency from the original? |

Good, but not like the chart we see on the bridge of the Nostromo.
"Stars of the Middle Heavens" is clearly seen on the chart (I know, it sounds like LOTR). Now, of course, if you're happy with it, that's all what matters in the end |

Take a close look at what Brownclaw's acquisition says in slightly smaller print, just below the legend "Philips' Chart of the Stars"... _________________ 26354

It seems to me the text STARS OF THE MIDDLE HEAVENS, and the smaller text right below it, is exactly the same on both — for instance, the words "THE SUN" can be discerned under the "THE" in "the middle heavens" in exactly the same location.
Brownclaw is most probably right, in that the prop department made a transparency based on the Philips' chart, just cutting away the "Philips' Chart of the Stars" title. _________________ 26354 |

Apologies for the poor photo earlier - here's a close up of the actual chart I purchased.

Way cool! Not enough star charts from the film. I'd like to see Lambert's plotting map, when she locates them 'just short of the outer rim.', as well as what appears on the screens when Mother talks to herself prior to the crew revival.
Here's a few I've found online, though not all are exactly from the film:
Screencap of Orbital approach
Scott Middlebrook's modification of a Winchell Chung starchart
And this bee-yoo-tee-ful recreation of Lambert's plotting screen. Don't know the artist's name to give him credit, but it was on a website he had back in the 90's. GREAT WORK!
(BTW: to minimize my use of screen real estate, I've been posting links instead of pix. Does the group prefer pix instead??? What is the Moderator's preference?)

You know, it's occurred to me that perhaps the Stars of the Middle Heavens map was turned into a transparency so it could be used and manipulated onto the VDU's... |

It looks to me that the map is correct, but just the very top of it is seen. You can even see the matching stars just under the title. Maybe it is underneath the transparency which is hiding the rest of it.

So...what's the orb above the title on the transparency? Is it an image of the planetoid, or a circular starchart? I'm confused... |

Now, why would they be looking at a map of the moon way out there beyond the Outer Rim...? |

One might perhaps surmise that the map was brought to the chart table because the Nostromo was supposed to land on the Moon after delivering the refinery, and then nobody bothered to clear it away...? _________________ 26354 |

Definitely the moon.
Notice what looks like 3 lines in the crater here circled in red.

These are ejecta lines from the crater Aristarchus, located in the Sea of Rains (Mare Imbrium) the large crater below is Copernicus.
If you wanted to be a little more creative, these could be the long abandoned scoop marks left over from Helium3 mining on the moon by Lunar industries Ltd?

I think it's a mashup of parts of the star map and the Moon photo, printed on clear film. Probably because it just looked cool and kind of evokes interstellar navigation. I doubt that it is meant to represent the actual Moon or anything specific at all.

Well, WY are supposed to have a base on the moon - it would certainly make for a cheaper layover than entering Earth's atmosphere.... |

Would be more logical to have the Nostromo land on the Moon than on Earth... |
