I was fortunate to purchase the hero light-up message reader and message card from the Serenity movie. Recently I managed to get a little something to complement the display.

This is the prototype message card. Not used in the movie but a nice behind the scenes archetype. It really rounds out the collection from concept to final design.

Made of similar materials to the screen used and manufactured in two parts. The silver ‘circuit’ is simply a decal and the black griblies rattle in their housing.

very cool. I need to start getting some firefly/serenity stuff, I'm already waiting on some cash from the verse, so hopefully I'll build up soon.

Really nice collection oldzey!

Did you weather the tallcards yourself (and care to share any tips)?

Thanks ToothTech,

The tall cards came that way. They look like they were dipped in ink and then rubbed with steel wool, which I think was the method that they used for the original props. From what I understand, there are 12 animals in the set and the person I got them from said that some of the cards are getting harder and harder to find.

You can see that there are two unfinished "tall cards" on each side of the lava lamp, and they are easily found on eBay. However, they are slightly larger and thinner and are not screen-accurate (they have the Buddha on one side, but only Chinese writing on the other side and they are easily bendable).

The weathered ones are screen-accurate, much stiffer (they clink like coins) and have the Buddha on one side and one of the 12 animals on the other side (and they are harder to find). I have the monkey, rabbit, pig, rat, and two ox's. I'm still looking for the other seven animals.

Thanks for the info. I have several, but they're all "new"--only a couple are the accurate ones.

Nice collection, Osmotic!
I love Firefly/Serenity, too. Such a shame the show ended so soon.
My Firefly collection isn't that big at all. So far I only have a resin Mal pistol (resin cast from screen-used) and a resin Jayne pistol.
I also built this a while back. It's Kaylee's reprogrammer from the episode 'Trash.' Just thought it was a really cool little prop. I used the reference pic from the Official Companion book to build it. It was a fun little project.

If you have time to put it together - great. If not, it still displays well sans the finishing and thumbscrews (as you can see in my photos above). If you're on the fence about it, then check out the information about the QMX Serenity "Metal Mal" hero version that will be released sometime in the future at:

http://www.quantummechanix.com/HOME.html

Here's an image of a QMX Serenity "metal Mal" protype along with a protype holster that was displayed at Starfury's Serenity LA con on 11/2 - 11/4/07:

So, compare that with the Sidkit Metal Firefly version (finished) from http://sidkit.com/instruction/fly6.htm

I like both versions.

One is available now that is NOT built (Firefly Sidkit Version) from the Sidkit website or on eBay (user: toyres) and one will be available in the future that IS built (Serenity Qmx version).

Dunno about the cost for the Qmx version, but it sure looks cool.

Some informative threads:

Hope this information was useful to you!

oldzey

Thanks Oldzey it does look good even unfinished as you say.I bought my own holster and modified it and actually like it better than the prototype QMx.I've been waiting on the Sidkit to see the QMx price but now I think I might go ahead and get the Sid.I think the QMx might be close to $1000 by the time it comes out.....

Sounds like a plan, Steevy. Good luck with your hunt! Smile

Be sure to check out the user "toyres" on eBay first. I ordered my BR Blaster Kit (it's still unbuilt, btw) from toyres for about $30 less than it was sold on the Sidkit website. I've also ordered metal BR badges from toyres.

On the other hand, I ordered my Mal pistol (before they were offered on eBay) and the concept Leon .357 mother's defender (which I haven't seen on eBay) from the SidKit website and paid full price.

So, all four items I bought from the two channels were in the same packaging with the same instruction slip "go to Sidkit for instructions" inserted in the box, so it's definitely the same company/person (Siderio) shipping them both out.

The only difference is that the prices on Sidkit are fixed, whereas toyres' prices on eBay vary quite a bit. Sometimes you can snag a gun for a lot less than retail. There was a Men In Black Noisy Cricket prop that went for about $65 the other day that I was watching (Buy it Now was $119). Looking at toyres' feedback, the Mal gun has gone for as little as $179 and I think even lower (retail $249). Be careful because sometimes they go for MORE on eBay than on Sidkit's webpage.

I use http://www.gixen.com/ to snipe my bids on eBay anymore because everyone else seems to snipe and it's almost necessary to be competitive. It's free and it works. No need to buy their "mirror service" even though it's pretty cheap.

Good luck and shop around!

Actually it was the weapon carried by the Alliance Solders.

This is the Bounty Hunter's Gun:
