|
|
Picture at my blog.
In the “Signs of the Times” featurette, from the five disc edition of Blade Runner, artist Tom Southwell says, about the creation of The White Dragon sign, “So, I got my book of neon out, and they had a picture of a really good dragon. So, I went ahead with that…”
The black and white photo in my triptych is a post-WWII neon sign in Ogden, Utah, and was published in the book “Let There Be Neon” by Rudi Stern, in 1979.
The same book also contains another photo of a neon sign dragon, which is likely the origin of the green dragon sign in Blade Runner.
Here is the original Star Noodle dragon in color: Flickr

This is AWESOME!
I wish the movie sign looked as nice as the real one though. Such a nice design in comparison.

Interesting find. In a pinch you do what you gotta do, especially with Ridley at the helm. They had to be resourceful - they didn't have the Mac or Google. And yet they met their deadlines.

LOL...I am a member at alt.fan.br...but I think I didn't become regular until late 90's . I think I spent more time on Blade Zone because they discussed less of the esoteric stuff than they did there. Great group of guys on there though. Are you still a member there?

My only excuse is that there is SO much stuff to sort through here - too much in a four-year lifespan, and I get sidetracked every time I look! As I noted with my post on magazines, no doubt others may have covered the same ground before me, here or elsewhere.
Still a great find, SSB AND WEKurtz - R13 _________________

I am in the same case than you, Andy.
alt.fan... is still alive and some of its "historic" members appear occassionally to post messages, but the traffic there has decreased significantly over the last years: Internet has became a "visual" environment and today there are many and much more attractive offers where discuss Blade Runner than in an all-text system... |

The ironic thing is that now I am on the Facebook version of alt.fan.br...I talk to them on a daily basis. Partially because at some point I became a more serious fan, and also because FB is easy and they are all pretty fun guys (and a few girls). I still read the newsgroup, but now as a google groups update, and I don't have to worry about any complex logging in like it used to be so long ago. The news group will always be there too if we ever decide to abandon FB
