Yes indeed, sad he passed away...and that makes the people who worked on that movie more important than ever.
Thirty one years and counting doesn't make for getting the stories/pictures and various documents easy to have and ultimately put into a book. Time is thicking and we aren't getting younger Crying or Very sad

Btw Tom, check your PM box, I've let you a msg on how to upload pictures on the site.

Banzai88:
Wore out the Rapidographs, tired of Amber Lith and her sisters, Ruby, and Emerald, and frosted Mylar and a big victim of the Mac, Letragraphica! All went the way of the buggy whip and ice man.

One note on BB: many of us from BR were brought over to MGM to work on BB by the genius production designer J Michael Riva who passed away just last year while filming Django Unchained. The movie family that he had is in mourning over our loss. No one I have worked with has come closer to matching the desire for visual detail that I saw in Ridley Scott, than Mike.

And the winner of the academy award in production design this year for Lincoln, Rick Carter, was art director on BB, and a close friend and colleague of Mike's.

This should shock you to see how this work was done in 1980/81.

Wow--hand-inked! Now that's a nice piece to have. And all this time I thought it was 995...Shocked

Thanks for posting that, Tom.

BTW, I think this pic was missing the'[img]' in front and the '[/img] after. You may find it easier to upload pix to Photobucket and then link them here. It also saves server space too, right joberg?

Right--and all those Lith sisters would have come in handy for the prop makers here.

Glad JMR got to work on great film for his last project; we all appreciate his work for sure.

Oh yeah: the scent of the pencils, eraser and inks...lovely
You don't have that with a computer! Btw, I'm still using Letraset (I have a collection of more than 500 sheets of various fonts (+ contact sheets for new fonts). Still working after all those years.

Same as you, I thought it was 995.
Thanks for sharing Tom

995 vs 99S:
Most people were confused... I wasn't very clear about it. It is 995 on some
of the sector signs (the ones that look like a soccer ball is in the center).

I did some digging thru your blog and became, well ... I'm not sure ...

The effort you go to get the exact font , and that degree of accuracy ...
Well, I'm not sure I get that. I had boxes of Letraset and would use almost
anything on those magazines because they were so deep background.

The neon was hand drawn, as was most of the more important, more
visible stuff.

Glad you found Glaser Baby Teeth. And the HORN letters were the same
font I used in The Muppet Movie (1979) for the bag from Doc Hoppers.

Fash was hand drawn with a litho crayon. All the type was assembled
on it's own layer and a litho film neg was made (letters being the clear part)
and an opaque white color key was produced ( which is a clear
sheet with all the type now opaque white). I could lay this on top of a photo or original
Art I made, so I could be sure to provide a dark enough background.
I could also stain the white type with Dr Martin Dye which I did on the
Zord logo.

Rep13 (Dave) and Synamax did most of the research on the fonts (I looked at my Letraset collection to find some).
I think it's Dave who figured that you were mixing fonts on a lot of stuff.
What we would need now is the number of magazines produced and also the entire Fash one (we only have half Crying or Very sad ).

Who did the Japanese characters on some of the mags? Some of our members are from Japan (or speak/read Japanese) and a few have translated some stuff that seems to jive with the cover.

Thanks for your continuous interest and sharing of valuable info with us Cool

Joberg:
I have shot a snapshot of the Fash cover and contacted Andy to see about
letting him preview it to check if it is appropriate for the site. It's a sketch
of a fashion model type with her chest and crotch area exposed, so I don't
want to spoil my welcome in the first week. I'll get back to you on this
point. I can send the text that was on a neg.
I don't know how many they printed, but the titles were Moni, Kill Weekly,
Horn, Zord, krotch, Creative Evolution, Fash, Dorgon, Droid (by Jack Neville)
and I think two others they didn't use ( and I don't have info on them right now
but I'll look to see if it exists). I may have sketched a dozen
thumbnails the size of a cig pack and they picked the ones above. Not sure.
(Oh, and I did a comic book cover for Buckaroo Banzai!)

About the Japanese text on those covers, much of it was cut from scraps
I had and it probably makes no sense to someone who can read. I feel bad
about that, and feel bad about misspellings too. But worst of all, I feel bad about the
hand lettered gibberish that is on creative evolution. Perhaps we can re do those things now.

I went to great trouble to translate properly, signs, car graphics, and the instructions
on the VidPhon but some things were rushed and my translator required a week plus their type house (two companies).

Film Mogul Run Run Shaw from China was invited to invest and I think he
Did partly because he could read our signs. Plus Rids awesum movie.

I fixed your Photo link Tom. To post an image and make it visable you have to do a few things. First highlight the entire image url with no spaces before or after, and then click the "Img" button in the posting tool bar. Then at the bottom where it says "options" you have to un-click the boxes for disabling the HTML and BBCode.

Great stuff BTW Very Happy I went to Art School in the 80's so I am familiar with a few of these techniques for graphic design too. Wink

Thanks for sharing Tom...great infos on those mags Love every minute of it.
Andy or Amish will have the last word on the NSFW type of cover...but as an artist (and European Wink ) it's not going to bother me the slightest.
It's part of movie history; it's just that I'll have to warn the girlfriend in advance Very Happy

If we are concerned with NSFW images, just post the image's url address and a warning that it is NSFW, so people can click on it at a safe time. This is a forum dedicated to 'R' rated Science Fiction films so we aren't too squeamish here. Wink

FASH cover: CAUTION : I've been advised to label this post NSFW.

http://propsummit.com/upload/2042/fash_cover.jpeg

As you look at this cover remember it was an "in joke" for the crew,
and it could be partially hidden by other magazines on the rack.
This was me saying the future will have it's own version of
"The Emperor's New Suit"! Which it did in spades, really.
You can find the names of both costume designers, and
most of the decorators somewhere on the cover.
I hope you get a smile out of it.
If you are offended, I'm sorry...never intended to do that.

Hello Tom,

In case you have not been told yet, NSFW = Not Safe For Work.

Thank you again for all of the wonderful information you have shared. I am simply blown away.

Take care,

Tom

These are photos of the litho flim neg. used to make a
white (opaque) color key that was positioned above
my sketch of the fashion model and other background
material that made up the FASH MAGAZING cover.
The red marks are opaquing paint used to fill holes
and block out the light.

Some time ago there were questions about this on the blog
and I have just gotten around to address some of them.
Sorry for the delay... (makin' movies.)

I'd be happy to offer ideas these Japanese members could
translate for the magazines, but it might be more fun for
them to create what they feel is right for that
magazine on that date within that movie. OK?

There is a site (I think it is called the ONION) where they
do bogus news stories for the fun of how absurd and
funny they may get. I think that is what I was doing
with these magazines back in 1981 (on a tiny scale).
Especially Kill Weekly (snuffing Jurors etc.). All the
magazines had some connection to the movie theme,
or style we were using, or crew members working every
day, or the gritty subject of death or life the characters
were facing. We should glue it to BR.

Would anyone want to join in with a project like this?

I have to say, when I saw the "Nagel" Rachel I howled.
Just perfectly done.

Great stuff and thanks again for sharing all this with us Tom...
I cannot speak for them but I'm sure quite a few of our members would be interested in a project like the one you mentioned.

I'm thinking about Rep13, Synamax, Kurtyboy, Staar, BeastMaster, etc.
It would be fun to come up with brand new cover and put it out there into the BR World Cool

Thanks Tom!
Thrilled to see the FASH cover, after all these years!

And rather amused I got as close to the pose as I did. With the help of another member here TEMPONAUT, I was able to incorporate the correct japanese characters atop the magazine, but took a bit of creative license with the subtitles elsewhere. And my interpretation is not quite as racy! Smile

It had been my intention to have those translated into japanese as well, but time has not permitted him to respond as yet.
