PostPosted: Sun May 26, 2013 7:20 pm    Post subject: Steel Barrels for the Tomenosuke Blaster Kit - RUN CLOSED Reply with quote

I will be doing a run of steel barrel to fit the recently released Tomenosuke Bladerunner Blaster kit (I assume they should fit Tomen's assembled Pro as well.

The price will be $50 plus shipping. If people are interested in having me cut of and mill the barrel flush on their frame I could do that for an additional $25. You can file it but you'll have to ve very careful to keep the end square.

Normally I only take money for products I've already made but since I don't want to get stuck with a box full of unsold barrels, this time I'm going to ask for a 50% deposit before I do the run.

If you are interested, please PM me (send no money yet). I'll let you know when I'm ready to proceed (it will be soon) Ill have to order material based on the number of people interested and get som additional tooling for cutting the slots.

UPDATE.

There's been enough response for me to proceed with the run, however, if everyone will be patient, I want to make another prototype barrel first. There are a few issues I'd like to work out before taking all you guys' hard earned cash. First, I'm not 100% happy with the quality of the tool marks from the turning, probably due to a worn carbide tool bit, so I've ordered a new one that should arrive in a couple of days. Yes, you could sand them out but with steel that's a PITA and I want these barrels to be like most of the parts in the Tomen kit, just apply finish and assemble. Second, the 3mm threaded holes on the sides that the receiver attaches to are in the wrong place. I assumed, at first glance, that they were on the horizontal centerline oft he barrel, but they are actually slightly above, which became obvious when I tried to assemble the barrel with the frame and the receiver. I have the correct dimensions now but want to turn a new prototype barrel and assemble it to all the other parts to the make sure everything fits properly. Third, and this one I'm not sure can be (easily) done, I'd like to work out a way for the barrel to be secured to the frame mechanically (with a screw or bolt) rather than epoxy, so it can be removed if desired. But this might not be possible without difficult end user mods to the frame and the cast in place metal plate.

Interest List taken down by DaveG. You will receive an email confirmation of your order.

The sign up for this run of steel barrels is now CLOSED. Thanks for the overwhelming response. Between here and the RPF I'm going to be standing at the lathe for many hours!

I will be sending out payment information soon.

If you missed this run but are still (seriously) interested in getting a barrel please PM me. I will be getting some extra material and making a few extras. I will put late comers on a stand by list.

Thanks

Send me a PM if you are interested in the Stands but don't send any money yet. I am going to make some more but I need to get the barrels out of the way first! For the barrels I took a deposit, only because I wanted a commitment before I ordered a bunch of steel. For the stands I will make them first, then take payments.

Just a friendly reminder - I'm ordering materials on Monday, 6/3. So deposits have to be in by around 6pm PST, Sunday 6/2 to ensure a barrel from this run. Only about two thirds of those that have expressed interest have sent deposits.

PostPosted: Sun Jun 09, 2013 8:38 pm    Post subject: Progress! Reply with quote

It's been a productive weekend! Here's the progress to date:

This represents nine individual machining setups:

1) Cut 12 foot stock to blank lengths
2) Centerdrill muzzle end
3) Surface muzzle end
4) Chamfer muzzle end
5) Surface turn length of barrel
6) Center drill breach end
7) Part off to finished length
8 ) Center drill breech end (again)
9) Cut shoulder

Originally I had planned to make the barrels in batchs of 12 but it turned out to be much more efficient to do each machining step to all 48 pieces, then move onto the next step. So they will all be done at the same time.
