Hi, this is my first post on this forum, had the urge to build a full size vidphon, I am wondering if the user Whitefall still sells the faceplate image files?

I have collected a few images from this forum of the vidphons and using google image search.

I am going to make it from a PVC pipe that I have, I shall post progress pics, I plan to get it as close to the movie props as possible, with a working screen and backlit faceplate

Welcome electronic_matt...good luck on that Vid-Phone (not for the faint of heart Wink ) I'm sure others will chime in with the face of that prop.

Eager to see what you'll produce

Great project matt.

Ben Whitefall`s face plates are awesome but aren't totally screen accurate and need a lot of corrective work if you intend to put light behind them,
I tried that a while back but ended up going with a solid printed version.

Your username makes me think your going all the way on this one with all the bells and whistles yes?
If you cant get a hold of Ben, he is a member here, let me know and I can help get your project rolling. Very interested to see progress.

Hi Very Happy

Yes I do plan to go all the way, I will backlight it, may be even have actual working buttons, I'd like to put a working screen inside hopefully with a video input connection.

Not sure if I should make it look worn and with stickers, or keep it looking new and clean hmmm

Great to hear, would love to see a functioning replica. Maybe the microphone section and buttons are items that can be tracked down.

Totally agree with joburg on the ageing but you can compromise. The vid phon unit can be shiny new but the half pipe booth must be aged and all the stickers added IMHO.
Activating and deactivating via the vid phon card would also be cool.

I think it will be a lot more work to make working buttons, I probably could do it and wire them into a nurmeric USB keypad, but not sure what real use that would have?

I could easily make it switch on when a card is inserted, just using a micro switch in a card slot behind the faceplate Smile never thought of that untill you mentioned that idea, I think I'll do that.

I wasn't going to make the whole booth, just the vid phon unit and probably will age it, I need to start it soon, first pics coming up soon!!

I started one of these a while back and have a thread here somewhere about it. I ran into a lot of issues with Ben's face plate dimensions and a few other snags. Still would like to finish it as a static lamp at least. Not sure how much is left on the old thread as far as images it was so long ago.

Edit: here is the old thread... http://propsummit.com/viewtopic.php?t=291&highlight=vid+phon

I'm still working on this, not forgotten it Smile

one challange was getting the Japanese from the front panel writen out in text to create the front panel, here it is if anyone else needs it.

使用法
1 VID.PHON カードを挿入する
2 スクリーンに出ている 事項を確認する
3 STARTを押す
4 スクリーンに相手が映る
5 カメラに向かって話す
6 会話終了後STOPを押す
7 通話料に関する事がスクリーンに映ります
8 VID.PHON カードを取り出す

I am back on this now, and I'm looking for help to find out which fonts were used.

Could anyone help with the name of the font used on the front panel, the part that says transmitting, start, stop etc..?

As seen here...

Back then, I'm guessing that would have been letraset rubdown type in terms of font selections. The typeface looks like frankfurter medium.

Yep still going at it, this is as far as I've got today with the front panel, cut from matte black vinyl, still got to weed out the instruction text, it's not for the faint hearted!

I may end up just getting the front printed instead of vinyl, but I don't think it will light up as well with a printed front, vinyl seem to blank out all light apart from the cut out sections.

Been doing a few more bits today, the main frame is now done

If anyone is interested in purchasing a frame kit, please PM me and I'll give you a price + shipping

I'm going to re-cut the vinyl as I've made some changes to it, I think I'll apply them to the outside of the acrylic, because from looking at the hero vid phon the front looks very matte on the black areas, even though it has been said that the original graphic film was placed between two pieces of acrylic.

Now need to think of the best way to create the outer body of the unit...
