I had been planning on attempting a new and (much improved) version of the Syd Mead blaster for years now, and with the help of the legendary Rick Ross, finally got started a few months ago.

I had originally planned to rework my first pattern but soon realized the only approach was to 3D model everything from the ground up and then print the parts. I just felt this particular piece requires a degree of detail and precision that I just can't achieve with my bare hands.

Using my original piece as a jumping off point, here's where the model is as of Monday. Please bear in mind that there's still a lot of work to be done, but the major bulk of the work has been completed. There were several critical geometrical conflicts that had to be resolved, but now that they have, the finish line is in sight!

Thanks for looking!

Shawn

Shawn,

That looks incredible. Cannot wait to see the finished kit. I'm assuming you will be offering kits? I'd love to see this latest one right next to your original model. That too was a thing of beauty.

If that's the case, between this one and the "Vera" kit you and Joatrash are creating, I'm going to just get a credit card in your name, my billing address and send it your way. Smile And now Rick Ross is in there too. I don't stand a chance.

Cheers!

Ted.

morganthirteen;

Amazing job!! I hpoe you release this as a kit!

Iv'e been looking at this design recently and came upon the conclusion... or guess that the cartrigge may load on that plate with hinge at the back of the gun... like a shotgun, instead of the handle like an authomatic pistol.

Thanks for kind words, everyone. I hope to see this project ready to be printed in a week or so.

The program used is Rhino 5.

Yes, there will be a run. I'm pretty sure the cartridge has to go into the grip but I am waiting to hear back from Syd (who never got to finish the design) with some more information soon!

Until Syd weighs in, we're all kind of like the blind men observing the elephant. My take, for instance, is the cartridge is some kind of power source and loads in the top once the slotted cap is unscrewed...

No, Nixon...yours is as good. Besides, we like to see what others will do with the same prop and their interpretation of it.

Nixon,

I want to say that it wasn't my intention to "step on your toes" as it were. In fact I deliberately chose to show my second attempt at this prop here instead of the rpf for exactly that reason. And if I had checked the other forums here and seen your post I doubt I would've posted it here, either.

I'd like to think that there's plenty of room in the replica universe for more than one take on a prop, and I hope that you continue to work on yours and complete it. I build props because I have a passion for them, I love the process of creating something real that can he held and displayed. Making someone else who obviously feels the same way I do NOT want to continue on a project they have a desire to build is a terrible feeling. Even if it's only for yourself you should finish yours. I'd love to have one in my collection, and I mean that sincerely.

There's nothing to apologize about Morgan, In fact seeing yours made me want to strive for a better gun. Cancelled my run because I realised I could do better after seeing yours and didn't want to sell something I wasn't totally happy with. I'm going to rework mine and will probably do a run some day when I get it to a standard I'd feel proud of selling.

Thanks for the inspiration for this and your original model Wink
