Still the grips are dark, lighter that the other side but dark and IF the light was low it lighted the butt plate better than the receiver.

True - definitely got some weird light sources in these pics.

Blaster was still pretty shiny on set in every scene.

Why dull just the receiver and not the mag housing or side cylinder covers?

Because they are flat and the Steyr is rounded...round catches light.

Note the hot spot even with a dull coat near the back on top.

That is the stunt if I am not mistaken used in that whole scene or did they switch back and forth?

No that is the hero, the stunt was very dull RUBBER.

The stunt was ONLY used in two scenes, when Leon swats it out of Deckard's hand and when Batty pulls the gun though the wall to protect the stunt mans hand.

And back to Shiny!

Indisputably shiny and blued in the above pic. No way you get that intense white highlight with a dull coat. No matter what shape the object is.

Another possibility to consider...
the prop could have been wearing "make up".

I'm been into firearms since the early eighties and wiping down your firearm with a silicon cloth or other protectant makes a difference.

Both of these stills have diffused soft light and are in very low light as well.

That is the kind of thing I am talking about.

Reflections are a big problem filming and a dull coat is often applied to many things...

Here is a fun fact, when I was on the set with Rod Greenman on ST he used colored HAIR spray to dull and color things, he could NOT use any paint due to union rules but hair spray was not covered and thus OK.

This bottom picture looks just like my gun. Black. I guess depending on where you are in the film the gun looks like it has a different finish.

Here's the latest Tomen, I've wiped it down with silicon cloth and light coming from above.

I believe that Tom Southwell saw the gun on the first day (being photographed that is...same pic that we all know and graces this thread).
He should know what kind of finish was on the original.

Now, of course, during filming that could change for a number of reasons...even transforming the hero to match the colour of the rubber stunt Confused

I swear the Tomenosuke and the Takagi are the same gun with different finishes. I do like the inner bolt part being silver better than mine being black. May have to just build one of these things and get it over with....

I ammm BACK....

OK here is a question: IF it started out all black why did it become black and sliver within the film?

And why if your right would anyone strip off the bluing after the film, and did it so well they ever removed the bluing in the stamped numbers and letters??

Like here note there is no color even deep inside the numbers...I believe this was a chemical strip.

After YEARS of study of all film (Bluray and laser disk and stills) and debate with countless of fans here and on the RPF and other sites I firmly believe this IS the correct color of the Blaster though out the film. The differences are caused by lighting and darking of the film.

Can anyone guess why I am so sure??

No idea what model year this is, and it's clear the finishes changed over time by the manufacturer, modern receivers seem to be very flat.
Need to see a vintage rifle that has been cared for. Interesting on this rifle the bolt and the receiver vary in finish. And what finish options might there have been then? A target rifle could be made to order with custom finishes.
