As you guys probably already know, I've been looking for a couple of Buddha heads for the collection without much luck for pretty long...

I even started making my own...

But then I suddenly found these on eBay...

They're going to require some work.. But they're pretty spot on! And with a combined price of $360 I'm pretty happy Very Happy

I've been researching these heads, and contacted different experts in asian art showing them screen shots... These are some of the responses I've got from around the world:

"Modern works of no distinct style - a mix of this and that"

"Are you sure that they are antique?? Because they look not so old to me…"

"These are Chinese heads and almost certainly modern copies."

"In my opinion these two heads are, as already told to you, recent made and images of buddhist deities, following the fantasy of its creator.
These are not antique and therefore don’t have any historical value.”

The rounded head was sold as a Guanyin / Kwan-yin goddess of mercy... Researching this name turned up some interesting results:

The iconic hair bun is a specific trait of this goddess. So perhaps this is in fact not a Buddha head...????

The other head with the pointed hat could have borrowed traits from the Thai guardian angel called a Kinnaree.... But the pointed hat is also seen on Buddhas.

My conclusion so far is.... that I don't feel sure that these heads are antiques.... I don't feel sure that they represent certain periods or locations... and I'm not sure that they are even Buddhas...

Anybody else researched these heads? I'm really interested to hear other's experiences?

Yes, when I get the other head home and get a stand made for it, I was thinking of doing some test casts.... If they're succesful I will make an interest thread. It will probably be a "limited edition" Wink

The finish is one of the things makes them great. I am sure the ones in the film also had an "antique finish" on them as well. I really love these. I still want to make new bases for my less accurate ones, but may try harder to find more authentic ones like the ones you have here instead. If they are also truly antique at all, it would be a sin to refinish them.

First cast of the hair bun head done... Used bronze as a primer, now the heavy weathering begins. Should be fun

Thanks, I'm really exited about this project...

It will never be a clean and smooth cast, because the original has a ruff, uneven, verdigrised and rusty surface Very Happy
