I thought some of you might find this interesting. I've seen a few posts on the topic.

I recently purchased both of these from two different antique stores in the US (one in LA). I’m thrilled with both of these, especially the Japanese Buddha on the left. Looks to be an extremely close match to the screen version. It wasn't cheap though. It really is an antique. Around 150 years old, possibly older.

My recent buys

Screen shot

Here's another screen grab. Even the point on top of the left Buddha's head looks identical.

WOW, nice buy! Very cool....

You know, if they're 150 years old, it would - very theoretically of course - be legal and morally acceptable to recast them... *wink wink* Laughing

What are the odds you got the screen used prop(s)? There can't be that many of these floating around 33 years later…

Ha! Yes, that had crossed my mind. It's nice to dream. As far as I can tell though, the Japanese Buddha is identical, so who really knows. The Chinese Buddha on the right is a very close match also, but not identical.

Found a side profile screen shot too. They used the same Japanese Buddha in the piano scene.

That's the one. Got them down in price though. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. I've spent a long time trying to find a match like this.

Thanks Andy. I'm chuffed to have found them. I've been looking on and off for the past year or so now.

The only thing that looks different with the one, is that the one in the film looks like it is coming off the stand. They both look identical to me. Any more historical information you can provide about the the 2 heads origins?

Hi Andy. Yes, the head on the right in Deckard's apartment looks a little wobbly, like it's not sitting on the stand correctly. I could easily tilt mine back by shaving a little wood off the pole the head directly sits on.

I can give you the following info I've uncovered. And I think it will be important to anyone trying to find anything similar or identical to the film versions...

The Buddha head on the left with the pointy head appears to be an Ancient/Antique Japanese gilt painted bronze statue, not a Thai Buddha. The one I have looks very old. At least 150 years, and was probably part of a bigger statue at some point in time. It was painted green at one point, as it has some rusty old green paint flakes in places. The head on the right is a Chinese Bronze Buddha, as the top of the head seems to be a style predominantly found only in Chinese Buddha statues.

So it's interesting that both Buddha's are not of Thai origin (there seems to have been some confusion about this in the past).

Hope that helps.

The reason I believe they had been called "Thai Buddha heads" is that many of the replicas of these where made in Thailand, but the styles were of unknown origin. I have seen similar variations throughout Asia. The thing I find interesting is the near total resemblance of these compared the the ones in the film including the stands. When I did the research on these originally, I found similar ones, including antique ones. The antique ones especially had great variety, and would usually only find one version of each, while the more modern replicas seem to be found more in numbers. It brings us back to the possibility that one ore both of these may actually be the one(s) from the film. The other options are that the antique ones themselves were made in numbers, or they are high end replicas, at least 33 years old. Could be made for export early/mid 20th century even, or even museum replica. I do find mis marked replicas at antique shops all the time. Most dealers are not experts, or are only experts in a field or two.

Whatever they are, if they aren't the same ones from the fim they likely came from the same source. This in my mind makes them more valuable despite their possible age.
