I definitely like the color of the graphite! But not super keen on the scratches... I think polishing it down, as Mark suggest, is the way to go to get a more even finish....
I'm working on cleaning up the metal parts and polishing at the moment, and havn't decides on the finish yet... I'm leaning towards a light bluing (buffed down perma blue) though... Want something like the picture below...
I know, I know, there's no consensus on the finish...!!!

If I go ahead and tread all the metal parts with BC Aluminium Black for an all black finish.... can I polish that back down to a grey finish somehow? What would be the best way to do that?

That is what I do, my black is too strong out of the jar so I mix it 50/50 with distilled water.
Then I rinse the dipped parts in tap water and blow the parts dry.
Wear good rubber gloves and only dip the parts until you see a fair gray covering, you do not need to go to full black, you just want to add some little black to make the too silver pewter LOOK like steel which has a touch of black in it.
Then I scotch bright them and the use a good metal polish to smooth and blend the color and hopefully get some protection.

OPPS Sorry my tired old eyes..
You want PEWTER BLACK for the main parts of the model and Aluminum Black only for the aluminum barrel...
I do not know what aluminum black will do to pewter...
I use both, but the black for the correct metal.

To my eyes the aluminum black did not coat/convert the pewter as cleanly as the pewter black did.

Agreed. Whatever it's reacting to is not evenly distributed within the metal. It was very splotchy. Perhaps a good look if you want a weathered/rusty/nasty looking metal finish though.

I've read somewhere that it helps heating the metal and treading it several times with the BC Alu black? But I think I have to experiment a little with it...

After some research I stumbled upon this product.... Novocan Black Patina.... just made a few tests and they're pretty good.. it leaves a dark grey finish, and with further applications the color turns darker, almost black... I imagine it can be polished to a nice finish...

It was US $5.90 on eBay so not terribly expensive... it's made for coloring the lead in leaded windows...

I'm still in the process of sanding, polishing, fitting, drilling, tapping, priming etc..... but things are slowly getting together... up next: Lots of chemicals!!
I even got a real binding post (thanks Veektohr!!!) and the unused side panel screw from my Tomenosuke....

Also got some work done on the ammo clip this weekend... a lot of free hand sanding and fitting, but fun to do
Still a lot of details I want to take care of... but progress none the less!
