Bellows are ace Cool !!

First thing first:

1: The bottom below is affixed to the top of the machine (that was to hide some of the electronics and the apparatus made to lift them in the first place Wink )
So, you'll have only 4 to worry about.

2: They were cut to fit the "hinge" part (the one rectangular piece with the 2 screws securing them) and lightly scored (at the rectangular piece's edge) to bend while moving ( 2 mm thickness should bend fine).

3: If you're worried about the cutting or scoring of the plastic, Colin suggested to secure them with some black fabric tape and to experiment with the movement and see how it goes.

Keep up the great work, I'm rooting for you man

Hi guys,
First of all thank you for the interesting read, these projects (also talking about Colin's own VK project here) are simply one of the best thing that has happened on Propsummit in a long time !
Anyhow I just wanted to let you know that Propostore currently has original VK blueprint copies for sale...
Here are three pics, hope they'll help...
Cheers
Fred

TFS!!! Presently working on scaling these images. The added pictures of the "eye" are great - finally I can see some of the details I was hoping to see.

I know these plans add even more question about the true dimensions of the machine. Due to work I've done so far I plan to continue my 415-430mm wide build.

With current dimensions and proportions (from pictures of the VK) I hope that if I need to scale down to a smaller machine it will be easier than this build (calculating dimensions and proportions has been a major challenge and changing scale is not as bad - I hope).

I saw this news just after I cut out pieces of acrylic for my 415-430 width build.

LearnByMaking these plans are a bit of a game changer!

Just think of everything you have done as good R&D and keep going no matter what size you settle on.

When I come back to the discussion we all had (Colin and I mainly) with Tom Southwell, regarding that V.K., is that the logo (and the V.K. bar on top of the machine) was identified by Tom to be 1 1/2 inches from left to right, 99% sure!

It's true that I wouldn't mind a smaller machine (let's say 40 cm) and trying to reduce the thickness also (if we're going with the 15 mm buttons).

The screens will always be a challenge for sure. If we reduce the V.K. to a 36 cm and a diagonally 4" big screen...we'll have even smaller screens for the 2 little screens Shocked

Joberg, good to hear that the size is closer to what you had already figured. I was busy looking at the newly released plans and comparing them to pictures of the actual prop (being built, finished as well as the British re-build) and I was finding discrepancies in proportions. The released plans seemed like they might be sketches prior to building the prop (a direction for how they wanted it to look instead of mechanical designs).
I'm forging on with my current calculations (415-430mm width). If I need to change things then this build will just be my test build to get everything working and to get the proportions right.

I forgot to add that I did some rough calculations based on the stepper motor used for lifting the arm (visible on the left of this picture):

These types of motors are designed to fit NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) frame standards. The motor I'm currently using for the arm is a NEMA 17 stepper - meaning that each side is 1.7" or 43.18mm. From what I've been able to find, these standards existed way before the movie was made.

This means that it may be possible to calculate a machine width based off of this motor. As I mentioned, I did some rough calculations (not taking into account the depth of field in the picture). The length of the motor suggests that it is fairly high torque and might require a higher voltage due to more motor winding's (more winding's, higher resistance, lower current at applied voltage levels).

That would make the VK roughly 32,5 cm wide? Shocked

I'm a bit confused by the measurement of that motor LearnByMaking Confused
You meant: one inch and seven eighth wide or length? Must be the width right?
Also, what are the length of those light bars again?

NEMA motor frame sizes are named by their width in inches times 10 (it is a bit strange, I know). This means that a NEMA17 is 1 and 7/10th's of an inch wide, NEMA22 is 2 and 2/10th's of an inch wide, etc. The picture below should help (the 42.3mm width in the picture converts to 1.7 inches):

I'll post up my dimensions for the light bars (hopefully by tonight). I need to work up some illustrations just to make it clear as to the points I'm referencing for the dimensions.

Buch,
You are correct (using the NEMA17).
Below is a quick (and dirty) run down of rough sizes based off of different NEMA sizes:

Got together some drawings (much quicker than I thoughtI'd be able to). They are design files in PDF format. Links below:

Hopefully these are helpful.

Scale is in mm (it labelled in tiny type in the bottom right corner - haven't figured out how to change the default font sizes yet).

When I'm coming back to what Tom Southwell said about the 2 labels he sent to the engraving shop is that these were to be reproduced as is.
So the Voight-Kampff plaque on top of the big screen is 95 mm or 3 3/4 inches long...something to think about Wink

joberg, it sounds like you have decided on a size!

Colin, I just went through the whole V.K. machine build, the infos/pics by Tom Southwell and Bwood + Stephen Dane vid. and it seems that at no time Tom mentioned that the engraving shop was transforming his 2 labels.

Then LBM gave us the length of the light bar on top of the big screen in mm,
that's when I put pen to paper and put the light bar + the button on the left of it; comparing the pics with the top plaque and where it stops (middle of the button) and measuring the length of the button compared to the length of the bar.

Open to interpretation of course Wink

I apologize for not updating my progress for a while, had a bit of job strife. Anyway, here is an update that I posted up on Youtube last night:
https://youtu.be/LhgbDpx9DcI
Joberg - I still need to run the measurements you posted concerning the VK label/plaque above the main screen.
I've been having a bit of trouble with the size(diameter) of the extending rod on the arm - Colin seems to have settled on 3/8th inch diameter (9.5mm) and I think Joberg stated 11mm (about 14/32 inch). Currently, just for testing, I've been using 1/4 inch (6.35mm) diameter. So... for a 415-430mm wide VK what do you all think the rod diameter/thickness should be?

Just by chance I came across another build of the VK that was just posted last week. Check it out : http://goldenarmor.com/voightkampff

Looks cool but not sure if Goldenarmor is aware of the 2 versions (US/NTSC and UK/PAL) of the machine. It does look like he is planning on selling castings of parts for his build.
