Machining a Steyr Receiver is a very hard to do operation. You can end up ruining a $1000.00 Steyr.

When machining you need to be very sure it will not pull out of a vice, (a Rod as a hold down is suggested) and it is suggested you do the machining to the right side of the holding tab first.

It is also suggested you do all the cuts in the center before completing the full cuts through the front and rear ends, these should be the last cuts made.

I decided to share these instructions on HOW to Machine a Steyr receiver. NOTE These are my best measurements, BUT use at your own risk.

I suggest buying one of my BUILT models and then taking it apart as a guild. This way you can see how everything fits and test fit as you work along, and you also have all the parts needed to finish you model.

You will note a number of the following pictures show one of my Cast Pewter receivers as a comparison.

Pictures and more details to follow.

Rich

OK Now we come to the specs...

Pay close attention here, measure five times and cut once, or better make small cuts and recheck before the next cut.

Motherlode right here. I was planning on putting together a video on my build after I'd finished mine, but all the info is right here. FWIW I would totally buy one of those cast-complete Steyrs, lol. I dunno it'd just be fun to have on display I think.

You've given this community so much, Rich. Very thankful for everything you've shared over the years. Also can't wait to get one of your kits this year!

As someone who bought their first Steyr just the other day, and was hoping to find a post like this somewhere, thank you so much for sharing this information!

Can you give a little more detail on the bolt lever bending? Do you bend it over something, or just clamp it in a vise and push down? How do you ensure it actually contours to the cylinder?

DadAtNames my understanding that there ARE bolt bending gun smith shops that do bolt bending.

I believe it is done by heating the metal up to soften them and then bend.

As I made plastic castings of all these parts and them machined them, I heated up a plastic cocking lever (bolt) and bent it.

This bending of a real one might damage the bluing, so plan on restoring it IF you doing a blued model or removing it if you doing a accurate model.

Bending the bolt handle will definitely mess with the bluing. Here's a video of the process on a different style of rifle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4n5F03wUSs

It is simple, but again easy to mess up. If you're not hot enough you could end up cracking the handle and end up having to weld it back together and grind it back to shape.

Totally! Most gunsmiths should be able to handle that request handily.

This is literally going to be my study guide for the next 30 days since, as of this afternoon I became the proud owner of a beautiful Steyr Mannlicher SL Rifle in .222 Remington! It is as perfect as you can get for being a 46 year old Rifle, the guy that I purchased it from took amazing care of it all these years and he said the finish is 99% perfect. He also has a .223 and he told me that the .222 was his baby. I can't believe the price I got it for either!? I'm still shaking my head with doubt, but I payed less than $1000 for a perfectly beautiful SL shipped from OR. I've never seen one for sale these days for less than $1400 on up to $2200, so I'm doing a jig around my kitchen right now, I got a lot of work ahead of me though and this is gonna be one Hell of a serious conversion!?

OK, this is my theory behind why the screen used Steyr Receiver in the film is stripped. I read eltree's "Real Shooter" thread and he was saying how he and his machinist buddy went through 2 bits per receiver when they milled them. So, I was telling my gunsmith about how machining the receiver goes through bits and he informed me that "as long as the receiver won't need to fire again, if you heat it up first it makes the gun steel much more easier to machine than if you do not, but it will remove the bluing" That made me think that is what the gunsmith did to the original receiver and that's why the bluing is stripped. It could be a million other reasons, but that's just my theory.
