I'm going to cast the Ennis house tiles to put on the wall of my cabinet display...

Going to do them in lightweight plaster, so the surface of the tiles need to be painted somehow to get that rustic, matte, sandy look... any ideas for the easiest/best way to achieve that?

I want a surface similar to this...

That's a tough one.

The only thing that pops up is some coarse sand on a bed of glue and then rough and thick hand painting

Buch,

Try a mix of sand, PVA glue and emulsion paint.

Look for the coarseness of sand you want.

Do a test first.

Thanks! What's the function of the glue? To make it bind better to the surface?

Yes it will stick to the tile and hopefully give a more even texture.

The emulsion paint helps bind it all together. You could pigment it with the colour you want.

If you just apply glue and then cover it in sand (Then shake the excess off) it may be patchy.

You know, the stucco kevdeo used on his shelf might do the job, lot easier to work with.

Not a bad idea... I'll need to find an equivalent, we don't have the exact brand here... will look into that as well

Maybe you have a compound for "Stipple Ceiling" in Sweden? Better known in Canada/USA as a "Popcorn ceiling". Yes, it's pre-mixed already and looks like you've put sand/gravel on your ceiling...

They may have that in Sweden, I don't know? Wink Wink

I found something at the online DIY today, the direct translation is "facade plaster" and the description and look matches that of Stucco... perhaps I'll give it a go... think I'll try some of the different methods suggested in this thread and see what gives the best result...

Wish you were closer. I'd give you one of these to cast. I actually have 2 of them because one broke during shipping and the seller just told me to keep it and she sent me another. It wasn't cracked on the front though and I repaired the damage. The only thing is they are VERY heavy and the shipping cost would be crazy expensive.

WOW that's a nice looking tile... love the chess pieces too! They've been on my wish list since forever...

I've gone with a smaller size tile. That way I can fit more in the cabinet and simulate the look of a full wall... I also need to make the tiles light weight so the back of the cabinet won't collapse
