So, late last night I decided to revisit Darren McGavin's early 70s TV opus, Kolchak: The Night Stalker, which ran for one season in 1974. If you're unfamiliar with the program, it's a quirky combination of 1970s character-based cop drama (with McGavin playing a Columbo-like tabloid reporter) and the X-Files. Chris Carter often cited it as the prime influence on that particular show. The whole thing is up on Netflix, YouTube, and various other places.
Anyway, I watched the episode "Mr. R.I.N.G.," which features a humanoid robot's escape from the lab and rampage throughout 1970s Chicago. Fun stuff, well acted, with a few genuinely creepy moments and lots of snappy dialogue.
But! The name of the top-secret lab that created the android? "The Tyrell Institute!"
I thought I heard it wrong at first, but nope - the name is prominently displayed at one point in the episode, and it's spelled the same. It's also constantly referenced in the script ("I have to find out what they've been working on at the Tyrell Institute," etc.).
Given that the "Tryell Corporation" is the "Rosen Corporation" in DADOES, I'm assuming that this is the origin of the name. In fact, the arc of the episode does have a few parallels with the non-book material in BR. "Android searches for meaning in an uncaring world," that sort of thing.

Nice! I used to love that show when I was a kid.
Didn't they do a movie length episode involving Jack the Ripper?
I'll have to look that up... |

It started off as that movie and 'The Night Stalker' referred to the vampire, not Kolchak.
The movie was pretty good and they liked the Kolchak character so it was turned int a series...
(Sorry, I know this is an old thread but I am still new here and wandering around finding interesting things...) |
