So, hello forum.
So I decided to spend my next few years to have an attempt on building this elusive machine. Blade Runner keeps coming back to me here and there. I wrote an essay about it and future cities back in 1998 and the movie just hasn't aged for me. As I have a background in design (not product design) and i know some electronics, it seems like a great project to dig in.
I previously finished a Denix based Dl-44 blaster (pics below), but the step up from this is painfully evident. Also seeing what you guys have produced is quiet insane. As most are building the small screen version of the prop, maybe I can contribute somewhat.
I feel very humble here. |

Here the CRTs I got from ebay. They are 5" and 2/2.5".
The Kingbright green red LED graphbar fits proportionally well given the close-up movie screenshots.
So my assumption at the moment is that I am on the right track.
The 10 bar LED gives me similar measurements that currently fit proportions fairly well.
I will have the shave disk coming in for the arm head, that might give me some more proportions to confirm.
My main assumption is that they simple replaced the small screen with a big screen (simplifying here) but that most other parts are the same.
Anyone knows how far the rebuilt for the UK version went? I saw some other aspects, like lifting the bellows, will look at that later. But sizes seem the same.

Exposing my measurements of the close-up for painful comments
the 5" screen is about 5mm higher, but width-wise it makes everything else beautifully fit. |

Markus, you've done quite the work/research on that V.K. version (not my favourite to tell you the truth )...but that doesn't mean that I cannot appreciate the effort and the willingness to tackle that complex prop.
As you know, since the U.K. screen was a bit bigger (height & width) they had to let go of the slanted side (left hand side of the screen) so the box containing the 2 small screen would still fit on the machine.
Also, the overall length of the machine wasn't changed...as for the width, that remains a mystery. Does the NTSC is smaller (in width) than the SECAM?
The bellows are now situated on top of a platform. Seems to me that, visually, the bellows couldn't go over the bigger screen, as they did for the original V.K., hence the higher platform (which wasn't on the original).
Also, if the innards of the SECAM screen were to be longer/bigger, the servo motor lifting the arm would have to be moved
That's why (my theory here) the shot of the U.K. V.K. doesn't show any arm movement.
Eager to see how everything is going to come together...as Ash said in Alien: " You have all my sympathy" |

Hey thanks joberg very appreciated. Yes agree on what you say. But I am the UK guy now
I gotta speed up on Tom Meehan though as he seems to build a fully funtionaly in record speed.
I am doing size testing next, putting screens and pieces in and seeing if my small size machine would fit everything. More soon. |

Great progress. Watching to see how it all comes together.
P.S. - I'm not really all that fast (though I like to think I'm persistent) _________________ If only you could see the things I've seen with your eyes. |

Have moved to a multiple Arduino solution as the green red bar graph has charlieplexing built in.
Any way to add videos here? |

Some progress on the small CRT housing. My measurements are holding up so far.
Cut off the tube to fit into housing. All good so far.
Need to think of a way to get the doubel housing open easily after assembly.
Ah and I guess you guys know what the Norelco shaver is for... |

Progress! Norelco has a fairly close grill design compared to the Remington one (Remington has a concave middle surface, while Norelco has a flat one).
As for the 2 screen box; yours should have a removable on piece bottom (including the 2 screens as well)
Keep up the good work! |

I thought the Norelco was mentioned somewhere in the actual design documentation. Did I catch that wrongly?
Was the model they used a remington?
Regarding small screen housing. Can you elaborate?
In my head I would have the top of the housing be removable like a shoebox top and have the structure underneath hold the tubes neatly in place. To be solved is the holes that lead out the cables from the small housing to the main housing. |

Only saw neew remingtons and they have a double blade not like the single blade version that the BR drawings refernce seems to have. |

Yes, it's the Remington as mentioned by Stephen Dane in the Vimeo documentary. I have the single blade Remington piece myself.
Maybe another type of Remington shaver could have the single blades.
As for the 2 screen box; I don't know how you would like to repair/service those little screens, but you should either have the entire housing in one piece and only the back, the bottom and the screen faces/ portions remaining whole (if you see what I mean )
Or, the whole bottom comes off (easier). |

I am trying to address tech and shape at the same time. Back to cardboard shaping and stepper testing. Also good hint from Tom on using counters in stead of shift regs. Saves space. |

MarcusKirsch, I just rewatched the Stephen Dane documentary and he does say Norelco and not Remington.

Same here Colin (I just have to stop eating only vegetables )
edit: looking at that blueprint in the Vimeo vid, it seems that my Remington is the one featured
I'll have to post a pic (at work right now). |
