Thanks for the feedback guys Well, next was the dreaded grey colour...I'm glad to report that the whole thing was near perfection Cool .
Next I sprayed a coat of silver + coat of mat varnish and it was off building the baffles at the rear. Remember; I opted for a static version of the machine, so the baffles are on the"up" mode, later I'll make other ones, but in a "down" mode. Of course, I had to try the lighting for the overall look . Next the little screens!

Let there be lights! (I'm quoting Tim ). Well, here we are folks; this baby is lit and it seems everything is working so far. Small details to work out before tackling the arm (that'll be fun), as you can see, I designed some graphics for the small screens...Thanks again for your comments

Very, very nice!

Fluroescent lights put out a significant amount of Ultra Violet light which, over time, will cause photographic-based (and much inkjet-based) graphics to eventually fade. You might want to pick up a small piece of UV-A plex to place behind the graphic inside the VK. UV-A means Ultra Violet Absorbing, and it's clear and won't reduce your light output or shift the colors.

yes the arm... not sure if this is of any help or even if its already been discussed (couldn't find anything in the archives) but ...

i was taking apart my camera yesterday and while dismantling the shotgun mic assembly i kept thinking how familiar it looked without that mic in it. it clicked when i logged on and saw your project joberg.

shock mounts. studio mic shock mounts.

they are usually attached to articulating arms with built in pulleys, they can gimbal and retract, and (IMHO) they are somewhat reminiscent of the arm on the VK. perhaps they were the inspiration or even one was retrofitted for the original VK.

i mean, think of it ... they are in a studio and prop builders are asked to come up with something. they are known for their resourcefulness and ability to use whatever is available to them. there would ostensibly be audio gear kicking around. they might have done this, made a number of mods, mounted the camera instead of a mic, added a bunch of detail (i know i am oversimplifying) and ... perhaps ... viola?

see below a few images i pulled from a most-cursory search into shock mount kits. its a shot in the dark but i thought at the very least, it could be a lead for us on sourcing the VK build-out and in your case, picking up an old/used/broken shock-mount system and retrofitting it could save you a bit of time versus a scratch-build.

your lights look awesome by the way!
cheers.

Thanks Tony for the tip; that's why I used Letraset: it will not fade with the ultra-violets that those lamps are spewing into my graphics...not the case with the eye, I thought of it too late I guess, but it'll be fine, since I'm not counting on lighting that VK 24/7 anyway.

Photek: thanks for sharing; I think, and by looking at the high-res pics on different sites, that the prop guys built that arm almost from scratch...it looks like the arm of a turn table/bomber navigator aiming device as I said before, it's going to be a challenge to built, 'cause there are 2 different versions and some of the "greeblies" are missing on one version in particular...oh well, we'll see what route I'll choose at the end Wink

I hope you'll show some pictures of the "VK project" when you're done. Would love to see it.

Very nice work, joberg.

I'm going to move this thread over to the Replica and Screen Used Props area, since it seems much more appropriate there.
