|
|
I thought I'd try my hand at the red keycard. I started with one of those phony credit cards you get in the mail from the companies trying to get you to sign up. I applied red scotchlite tape to the front and back of the card. Then I used Illustrator to replicate the graphics on the concept art, rotated the squares that make up the star pattern so that it's symmetrical.
I printed it onto a transparency sheet, then applied that to the front and back of the card. I then took one of those DIY laminating pouches, snipped off the adhesive part, and overlaid that on the card front and back, and trimmed it down to size. The photos are a bit washed out from the flash (can you tell I'm an amateur with the camera?) the card is more of a darker red than it looks here.
I'm not totally pleased with the finished product, the addition of the adhesive laminate really tones down the metallic of the scotchlite, but its the only way I have to protect the transparency from smearing should the card be handled. It did look really sharp with the transparency alone over the scotchlite tape. I'll have to find a better way to get the transparency printed. Inkjet photo printer's are great for reproing artwork but not so much for things like transparencies. _________________

I like what you done with the Tyrell logo on the back, works really well with the style of the front.
With the inkjet transparencys I printed the graphics in reverse on the print side which has an invisible coating. that side was stuck down to the paper.
The ink shouldn't smear unless you're printing on the wrong side or not using proper inkjet transparency film.
also, here's a snippet of sebastians card in the movie:

Try a spray of clear gloss spray paint over the card ,that way the ink wont smear .....it works on photos I print for myself ..... _________________ I've seen things ....you people appear to be intrested in ... |

I'm using window transparency sheets, the kind that stick by static cling, which does hold it nicely to the scotchlite. I'll have to try the reversed printing method. Thanks for the tips Beast! _________________

I decided to do the whole set. Still not quite there yet though, too many visible air bubbles in the black card and some of the others. I'll have to try the spray fixative method next. I would have tried it on this batch, but the only can I had handy was about 10 years old. I settled for applying another layer of transparency film over top to protect the print, it works much better than the adhesive laminate.
Using this method over plastic cards does give a really nice feel to the card, much better than laminating a heavier cardstock card.

Looking good Loyal. Nice work on the additional graphic design
I might have a go at the keycards if I get the time. I've an idea towards a different approach |

I have been working on these ever since I got my DVD set
Here are my versions, printed on CR80 PVC cards (just got my own Fargo ProL ID card printer)
On the left is "as" conceptualized, on the right, my modifications to "bling" it up.
Enjoy.

Nice work, Loyalizer, especially for an initial go-around. I appreciate the step-by-step, as well. How long did they take you to make? |

Thanks, the cards took about 45 minutes or so to work up the graphics in Illustrator, then about another 30 minutes give or take to apply and trim the reflective tape on the blank card. Maybe 15 minutes to put the overlays on and then trim them.
So, say about 1.5 hours to do all the cards assembly line style. I'll have to try the other method that was mentioned about printing them in reverse on a transparency the using spray adhesive to apply them to the cards. I'd like to find reflective tape that is wider than what I'm currently using so that I can avoid having a visible seam line on the card.
Phoenixvader's cards look pretty nice. Having it printed directly on the card makes a world of difference. _________________

OUTSTANDING job, guys !!!!!
Loyalizer, I especialy like the design of your set, it's both very basic / efficient and elegant !!! It reminds me a little bit of the graphic design of the late 80's / early 90's, with obvious reference to the 30's grahic design...
Phoenixvader, bravo for your set as well... your yellow card is just GORGEOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks again for sharing this with us, it's very inspiring !!! |

I just pulled the design elements off the dvd. I think the only thing I did was change the font to a look alike version. _________________

I really like the work both of you guys are doing on these.
I'm a complete prop whore when it comes to this film, but this is the kind of stuff I really enjoy, as it helps "complete" a solid BR display. I ordered one of s44's gold foild cards, and I'm SO anxious to get it I can barely stand it.
I wonder how these would look in foil? _________________ I don't have enough blasters! |
