A quick story which will bring me to my question:

Years ago, before the World-Con photo's and the availability of Metal Blasters, when I first went looking for a BR Blaster to purchase I came across Richard Coyle and got on one of his lists as interested in a Metal Version.
During this time I was looking like CRAZY to find original Steyr Parts and finally found an auction on E-Bay for the parts I needed to start my Metal Blaster from. The only thing was, I just wasn't certain as to what I needed exactly, so...reluctently, I showed the auction to Rich.
He told me to forget the auction, that the parts offered were NOT the correct model number , that it would be a waste of time and that I should just wait and pay his asking price (then) of over $1000.00 for one of his metal ones...so I followed his advise, well...the part about dropping the auction anyway...
Later I suspected that Rich secretly bought the parts himself, but that's just a suspiscion, I never confirmed it.
Question: What IS the correct Model Number of the Steyr Rifle used for the Screen Used BR Blaster?

I was told it was the 4 digit numbers you needed to look for.

The four digits stamped on the front of the receiver are not the model number.

It' a steyr model SL. There are other models in the line, differing calibers and such, they all have different mag bottoms, and recievers, but the same basic styling.

The 4 digit stamp is probably a series number, parts Id number, or just a good old fashion serial number. It's low for a serial number though, but that would be my guess. A phone call to Steyr would answer it though.

I sincerely doubt Rich bought it himself. I don't think his masters were cast from his own rifle. You can still find these rifles on gunbroker, and such from time to time, they are rare but not impossible to find.

They ARE expensive. $1200-$2000 depending on condition and age.

Here's what I was told :

It is the Steyr Mannlicher Model SL in .222 Remington. - Not .222 Remington Magnum

I was given a line on one and am thinking about purchasing it, anyone have any idea what I might be getting into here?

I can't do any of the work myself to convert it so, for starters I'll have to find someone who knows what they are doing...thoughts? Suggestions?

I believe Eltee has a federal firearms license and a gunsmith who might be able to help you.

Unless I'm mistaken, to my knowledge the SL was never available in 222 Rem Magnum, only 222 rem. I'm not sure the remington magnum was a very popular cartridge and was not around very long.

I think you've got a line on the right one, but you'd have to see the mag bottom to kow for sure, if it's a different caliber the bottom should look different.

There is a Remington Magnum:

http://www.collectorsfirearms.com/admin/product_details.php?itemID=12358

Only difference is the bottom of the mag reads "222 Rem. Mag" instead of "222 Remington"

Receiver and mag housing is otherwise identical.

Man, that sure is a pretty rifle, ain't it?

Almost a shame to chop these suckers up.

Thank you for posting that Hirohowa, I wonder if the single trigger models were all in rem mag. Never was quite sure about the single versus double set trigger models.

I did a quick search for Steyr SL on that site, looks like they have a few others too.

To show my heart is in the right place you do want a older four digit Match rifle with the twin triggers. The year is 1968 and per the stamping on the front.

The Castings I made ARE of the correct year and model.

AND NO I did not go and buy it after telling you not to.

I suggested that you could get a compleat accurate model and save thousands by buying one of mine.

Wait until you price having a real receiver milled and hope it does not twist in a jig and scar your $1000.00 receaver, as I have heard tell of.

Rich

Does the 1968 SL have the correct style magazine with the release on the front trigger guard?

Thanks

I beleive that all three models of the Steyr SL models are available in either single or double set triggers. For a Blade Runner Blaster conversion either trigger formation will work as those parts are not used.

That rifle is indeed very pretty - I can't remember ever seeing a full stock SL before. And that wood is just beautiful. Way too pretty of a gun to cut up.

As far as I know, as I had already modeled the ammo housing and clip I only made a copy of the Receiver when I redid it with a more accurate version.
