|
|
Last Christmas, I gave my wife an IOU in lieu of her major present. I told her that I would build her a workbench so that she'd be able to make her jewelry without cluttering up our dining room table (it was something that she had mentioned wanting since shortly after we moved in last summer). She wanted it in the closet in our spare room, so that she'd be able to just close the doors and hide her supplies when we have company over. I also told her that I would build her a rolling cart of drawers (similar to a mechanics cart) that would hold her cases of beads and things when she wasn't using them.
A few weeks ago, I built her the workbench from some melamine shelving and red oak trim. I left a small lip around the edges to contain any spilled beads, and softened the sharp corners with my router. I attached an adhesive backed ruler to the table top so she'd have a handy way to measure the lengths of her necklaces. I also mounted a couple of fluorescent lamps to the wire shelf at the top of the closet so she'd have good light to work by. Part one was finished, and she was thrilled.
On Saturday, I wade a pilgrimage to The Depot and picked up a couple of sheets of MDF (I had them cut in half, but it was still a chore trying to fit 4' x 4' sheets of MDF into a Camaro), some hardboard, a few casters and some drawer handles. Two days and a whole bunch of sawdust later (nothing makes sawdust quite like MDF, let me tell you), I was done. She now has six drawers that are about 22" (w) x 12" (l) x 4" (d) to store her supplies. And, best of all, it rolls neatly beneath her workbench, so it too is hidden when company comes by.
Here are some shots of the cart:
And, here it is under the shelf:
I hope everyone else had as much fun with their weekends as I did. _________________ Pete |

Neat--are you planning to paint/stain it or leave it as is? _________________ - Brian (formerly ToothTech)

Finishing is her dept. She's going to paint it at some point in the next few weeks (I don't think that you can stain MDF), then probably add a few stencils and stuff to give it some personality. _________________ Pete |

Shelf paper with duckies and bunnies. A bit of an homage to Johnny Dangerously.
