For a long while now I have been toying (not being punny here) with the idea of
recreating the "Laughing Man" from Sebastions apartment.
It would function in the same way as the screen version, probably on some kind
of motion censor so that when someone walked by it would rock back and forth
and sound out with it's characteristic, "Hah-hah-hah!----HaaaW-hah-haaaw!"
It appears to be a pretty straight forward sculpt.

Does this sound like a project anyone would be interested in?

How about some good screen caps to start this off right?

Has anyone noticed he changes during the scene where Deckard passes in front of him?

Yep, I think you're right... If I remember well the commented version of the Director's cut, Ridley Scott says they were very lucky to put an hand on this ancient dolls collection, one of the most impressive in the USA...

(BTW, wouldn't like to own a laughing man, too spooky for my home... and just in case someone would plan to geneticaly recreate some unicorns in the future... Well, wouldn't neither be interested in one of these !!!)
LOL

" We built very few of the toys in Sebastian's suite," Lawrence Paull said. "Most of them were real"

"The majority of the toys seen in Sebastian's apartment were obtained by set dresser Linda DeScenna from a local Los Angeles toy/train/automaton collector living in the San Fernando Valley, Benny Marvin."

His collection reaches back to the 17th century

Cool Idea for sure. On a smiliar note I have thought about commisioning a Kaiser and Napolian bear (for my Girl of course Wink)...I even took a stroll into build a bear workshop once. One of the great things about collecting Blade Runner stuff is the ecclectic(sp?) nature of it allowing anybody to find their own niche with it.

I wonder, is it the same laughing automata that is prominently featured in the old 70s version of Sleuth? I don't have a Sleuth DVD here to check, so my memory could be completely wrong. Apparently that DVD is not so easy to come by. Out of print, I think.

If it is the same, it might provide some additional helpful visual reference. If not, well, Sleuth is a good movie to enjoy while researching.

(edit-A quick google check suggests the one is Sleuth was much much larger. Funny how the memory plays tricks.)

I have the DVD!!!

The laughing automata is a sailor. This movie is a must for collectors. It has a ton of games, figures and all kind of collectibles there! The chess set, for example, is wonderfull. I've taken some snaps for you.

Here's some HD 'caps:

I'm assuming jfuste's 'caps came from the 'FC'. It's amazing how clear they are. I'd LOVE to see someone 'cap the heck out of a Blu-Ray FC.

Here are some points of interest:
Pretty clearly it's a pipe I'm seeing in the man's hand.
But I don't get the bandage around the head?
Thats also real hair of some kind for the moustache and goatee.

I would say that we are most definately dealing with two different dolls.

Megan say's that doll clothing is VERY difficult and really wants me to find some other interest.

I wish you hadn't said that. Now its gonna take me hours to get the image of James Lipton laughing and rocking with that insane cackle from the doll out of my head.

I have located an excellent "Doll Clothier" if that's a real thing and she has contacts for creating the head and hands in porcelin if I'm interested.
Also have contacted a very good tech person concerning the rocking back and forth motion and laughfter...hopefully he'll be in touch soon.
