|
|
Hey Guys,
Been with this site for a couple of months now and have been amazed and inspired by all the talented and helpful people here. I wanted to make somthing from scratch for my first contribution and Gaffs helmet jumped out at me.
I was surprised at how easy and cheap it was to source all the peices, even the original WW2 helmet and headset. The voice tube is not the one i wanted, but the shipping on that one was nearly more than the whole replica. The hardest peices to find were the purple wire, surprisingly, and the bowtie. I searched for mind numbing hours for the screen version online but ended up getting the closest one and cut strips of gaffa tape, no pun intended. think it works ok.
I put this together from the standard two screen snaps so if anybody has any different pics, please contact me so i can adjust for accuracy. The foam head is from here in Oz and apart from being cheap, has an expression you can work with, Im sure that anyone who is slightly artistic
could do a better job with Gaffs face, but i think i got the sneer right.

Very cool, makes me realize too, how far off I am off I am from finishing mine. I like your take on the cross wires, I need to take another look at them.

Cheers Fred and Andy.
For the cross wires Andy, i got some corrorgated A4 size thin cardboard from my local office supplies, comes in five colours and was also handy fitting out the interior of the medicom spinner i converted.

I had been looking for wire with a similar pattern. also I had thought about using a long spring around the existing wire to give the same look. I am still not sure what it is exactly though.

I should also mention that Borders has a disguise kit for an affordable $5 that you could use for eyebrows etc if you wanted to give it a bit more realism. |

Thanks for the tip SLK. I got a haircut about a week ago and toyed with the idea of using some of the offcuts for the tash and brows, too messy.
Are the ones from Borders realistic looking or do you get your full $5 worth? _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

They are not too bad. They are intended as a novelty item but good for what it is. May want to call ahead and see if your local borders has them. |

Looks like a helmet liner for a pilot's helmet. Not sure if its a UK or US liner, but it resembles the liner found in the SPH type helmets used in helicopters. _________________

Thanks Nathan,
I got all the main pieces from ebay(US) The exact item descriptions were given as,
WW2 US Army Air Forces Flight Helmet ANH-15. It was listed under collectables, WW2, I began searching under aviation helmets and went from there. Make sure you check through all the other options ebay will give you.
WW2 AAF Fighter Pilot Flight Helmet Earphones. HB-7 Headband and R-14
Receivers. I found this in WW2, field gear. Also try Vintage Headsets etc.
You have to remove the leather padding from the metal headbands. As far as i can tell they are the exact ones, along with the helmet, used to make the original.
All other pieces were scratch built just using the movie snaps as a reference. Just search "voice tubes"and "Foam Head Displays" on ebay to find those bits. As a guide,i think the whole thing ran me about $90.00US.
I should have taken pics along the way and will do so when i start the
Chews headgear project. Hope this helps and feel free to ask any more questions.
