Thanks OffWorld66, but according to my research and the type of product used to do the tiles what you'll need is a coat of paint (latex) to achieve the B.R. look. The main problem is of course the cost of a mould that could withstand the moulding of thousands of tiles. It's always the same dilema: the more tiles produced, the lower the price for a tile.
Also the product used is very lightweight and could be affixed on a wall with regular white glue, or with a glue gun.
More news to come in a few weeks... |

Offworld66 (Or anyone else who owns one of these tiles), I was wondering if you wouldn't mind giving me a thickness measurement of a couple of points on the tile. primarily the corner square (which is the highest right?) and perhaps the thickness of the steps in the middle. Let me know and thanks. |

Here ya go Hasenbrau, the pics are for reference only but the measurments are exact...........
Square, highest point 3.9cm
Above square, second highest point 3.1cm
Other corners 2.5cm.
Hope this helps. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

Thanks a bunch! I'm going to try and make a quick 3D model of the tile in foam-core-thick layers and then see if I can't put together some kind of template for folks interested in trying to throw one together as joberg has done. We'll see. |

So I had a little bit of time tonight to go in and make a basic model of the tile. I laid the 3D file out in layers about as thick as a sheet of foam-core poster board as if I was cutting and gluing this up out of actual foam board:
Obviously the 3D model is an interpretation and also lacks the bevels and texture of the real thing, and so would a foam-core version require some experimenting to mimic the properties of the real deal. A Foam-core version could certainly be a good jumping off point though.
Here's 2 more pics, one showing sort of an exploded view of the layers, the other showing the layers in different colors while assembled:
So I was thinking about putting together a template set that anyone could print out at actual size (16"x16") and use to build something along the lines of joberg's tile. I wanted to ask if anyone besides me would be interested in me putting this together. This is something that could certainly be built out of wood, or cardboard, or any number of other things too, not just foam-core.
Additionally, I'd probably mark each layer with optional template cutout lines, if anyone wanted to break down the larger layers further to perhaps use their building materials more efficiently, Would probably look something like this:

Impressive Hassenbrau. As you can see this tile is complex. The manufacturer I'm with right now has taken measurements with a 3D machine and has the different levels all figured out in his computer.
That will serve as a template to produce the mold. Btw he can either shrink or blow-up the measurement; as you remember my tile is 12x12 while the original is 16x16. I think I'll ask him to make me a tile the size of a key chain holder ) |

Hasenbrau, very impressive! What program did you use to make this? If you don't mind me asking that is. |

Thanks guys. And Gaff87, I certainly don't mind you asking; I used 3DS Max 9. It's not really meant for CAD work, being that it's more of an artistic tool, but it works in a pinch. Awesome program though.
I'm not sure when I'll get some time to sit down and make some template files out of this, but when I do I'll be happy to email them to whoever's actually interested. |

BTW: if this project is a go, and because of copyright laws, I will change the name ''tile'' to another name; people interested in buying will be contacted on their e-mail adress with the new ''word'' that will have to be used in every correspondance pertaining to this topic.
I'm always open to other suggestions. |

WOW! This is a big and well done work!!!!
I've recently bought this tile at ebay, 8x8" but...
...this 3D model is plenty of possibilities!!!
Check this one too. I'll buy it to do some research...

Hasenbrau, a few tricks to build the tile:
1) Start with the middle squares and go toward the edges; it's easier that way.
2) I used 5mm thick foamcore, so the outer edge square at the lower left side of my picture is: 8cm x 8cm square and 3,5 cm high from the bottom edge of the tile to the top of the square and since the square is the highest elevation on the tile ( including the 2 dowels) you can figure out the rest of the different elevations remaining on the tile.
If you need other measurements gimme a shout. |

Cool, Thanks for the info joberg.
Edit: I opened my file back up to check some measurements. I too was assuming 5mm foam-core board, this obviously doesn’t get the exact proportions and depth of the real tiles, but for foam-core it’s not too bad. This does mean that in my model no elevation edge change is less than 5mm, which certainly isn’t true in the actual Ennis house tiles. Assuming 5mm thickness for each of my layers, this tile is 4cm tall at the corner block, 1cm at the lowest outer corner, and 0.5cm thick in the middle at the lowest point of the tile.
The corner block is 11.25cm L and W, and the whole tile is 40.64cm L and W (16in x 16in). Of course the whole thing is scalable, and one need not use 5mm thick foam-core if they prefer thicker or thinner.
This is something fun to play around with, but I think if I were to cover a room in these, which is the plan I’ll be better off buying one tile and casting it in a plaster of some sort and painting it…Or I can wait and see what you’ve got cooking joberg |

O.K. everybody; here's the latest news concerning the ''Wall Decoration'' better known as: WD.
The factory will close for the Holidays from the 22nd of Decembre to the 5th of January. The person responsible for that particular project will try to first fill his quota (and business) with his regular clients before the Holidays, therefore the WD will have to wait a little longer than anticipated.
Since it's a fairly complicated design, he asked me to be patient, assuring me that he wants to do a good job at reproducing the product.
He explained that he will need two moulds (male/female) to achieve an exact repro. When I asked about costs he couldn't give me a quote, but since I'm not paying him for any of the pre-development I feel lucky that he seems interested to go the distance for this product.
Stay tuned... |
