That is a very fair price.
I'm so tempted by this but not sure it'd get into the UK without problems. |

Black castings should be no problem, as for the European shipments Neil, maybe you can get some confirmation from your local postal carrier or customs rep, someone should have answer on how the package needs to marked for guaranteed clearance. |

I had a quick look on the net and found this...
http://www.cheshire.gov.uk/tradingstandards/business/Toy_Guns.htm
Quote: | What will make an imitation firearm unrealistic?
An imitation firearm will not be regarded as realistic if it is:
transparent or bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright pink, bright purple or bright blue in colour; or
less than 38mm high and 70mm long; or
a copy of a pre-1870 firearm. |
Is the orange you're going to be using a bright orange? |

For European versions, I can proceed with compliance to:
An imitation firearm will not be regarded as realistic if it is:
* transparent or bright red, bright orange, bright yellow, bright green, bright pink, bright purple or bright blue in colour;
Exemptions to the ban
There are some situations where a realistic imitation firearm can be manufactured, imported or sold, although these exemptions will not be relevant to most retailers. They are:
1. Making the realistic imitation firearm available for:
- the purposes of a museum or gallery (I assume you have your own gallery!, they do not mention public)
- a commercial event at which firearms or realistic imitation firearms are offered for sale or are displayed i.e. at an arms fair. (or maybe display at a commercial collectibles show?)
Regardless, will produce a bright color as mentioned above, if orange is your preference. |

Do you work with that material referred to sometimes as "hyperfirm?" It is a rubber like material used to make stunt guns that can be dropped or thrown at someone.
Would be interested in a stunt gun made of stunt material. I think you might have another market if you can cast your blaster in that rubber as an option. Star Wars fans buy up hyperfirm replica stormtrooper rifles and biker scout pistols as soon as they are available. |

|
|
I have worked with many different resins over the years, including various rubbers, foams, and some high-impact durability urethanes (military training weapons). I have worked with 4 different manufacturers:
Cytec's Conap brand, BJB enterprises, Freeman, and Smooth-On.
If rubber is preferred, this will take a great deal longer in cure times, the most I could produce one and if accelerated two cast a day. Cure accelerators also increase costs in addition to the increase for urethane rubber. This would put me in a different situation, in shop time and costs (It would then be a daily drawn-out process), increasing the price to $140 per casting on any of the formulas below:
Smooth-On provides:
* VytaFlex® 10 - Shore 10A hardness (recommended 24 hr cure)
* VytaFlex® 20 - Shore 20A hardness
* VytaFlex® 30 - Shore 30A hardness
* VytaFlex® 40 - Shore 40A hardness
* VytaFlex® 50 - Shore 50A hardness
* VytaFlex® 60 - Shore 60A hardness
(Demold time is 16 hours without accelerator, can be tinted black)
AeroMarine provides a reasonable cost concrete mold making/stamping rubber (although I have never used any of their products):
Mixed Viscosity Thin liquid
Mix Ratio 1 :1 by volume
Pot Life, minutes @ 77ºF 5
Cure time, hours @77ºF 12
Tensile strength 750psi
Color Black
Shrinkage negligible
Durometer 75 shore A
Elongation at break 500%
If this is a path the majority prefer, I would like to focus on one type of resin, so I don't have to purchase multiple formulas.
If we can all achieve an agreement of the material, or alternative suggestions I am sure we can arrange it. I would like to satisfy everyone's request, and if rubber stunt prop replica is preferred to give this project a higher interest we can go with that. While we're on the subject of going to rubber, for an additional charge, I would consider producing an amber-gripped resin/rubber stunt replica, identical to the actual stunt gun, right down to the same black machine screws.
For those that have already paid (that would be one member currently). You can have a say as well. If you prefer a solid cast hard resin as originally proposed, I will still offer that, and ship as purchased.
Whenever we have a final decision, I will start the process immediately upon payments.
BTW, I did look at Smooth-On's Flex Foam-It! 25, has great properties, but nearly double the price. |

I think the higher price is well worth getting something that is extra durable. Still I don't think I will be trooping with it through . I am certainly going to have to think about it as an option.
The idea of the grips is also very intriguing. I am guessing you would be casting the grips from the stunt itself and refitting them?
For some strange reason I have a fantasy of having the misshapen grips that biggles now has, on a stunt Honestly though having a prop that looks like that would only have value if it where an original to me. Still an amusing mental image though.
There are some good pictures of the screen used stunt in Paul Allen's collection at the Seattle Sci-fi Museum on Flickr. It has the add on grips.
Still a very cool concept for those that love the history of the movie's props.

I would pay that asking price if the finished product is the same or better than hyperfirm or the rubber formulation used in stunt guns. I have several but do not know what material they use. The other request is that the rubber used be paintable.
I can live with black rubber grips like on the patrolman guns, or paint them in a faux amber color to simulate the hero gun.
Anyway, to me $140.00 for a rubber casting is reasonable.

As of this morning the favoritism of members are a simple cast black resin.
This is also the preferred offering.
To all that want to proceed with purchasing a black resin version, I am already receiving payments and don't want to hold up the project for any long period. If you would like to purchase, I would like to set a date for member commitments by this Saturday March 15 with payments processed no later than Saturday March 21.
If a rubber version in black is preferred by any members, I will keep a list of requests and can offer at a later time if interest grows.
Thanks to all interested. |

the problem with the rubber is it's difficult to do any proper finishing work to it. resin can be easily filled and sanded then sealed with a nice coat of matt black primer. depends on if you're bothered about it lookin pretty or not _________________ "F*ck it, it's just a movie.
