|
|
Has anyone tried to polish a Sidkit or Coyle and then apply one of the cold blueing chemicals? I seem to recall someone polishing up a sidkit to a smooth, bright finish but don't remember seeing any pic of the finished blaster.
I ask because a friend of mine takes beat up real guns, buffs them to a mirror finish and then uses "Cold Blue" and he gets a fantastic result. Looks like factory hot blueing. I'd love to know if this has been done to one of the many pewter / soft metal guns (Collectors armory, Japanese "non-guns" and the blaster replicas) out there.
My friend does it on real guns that are made of steel so I don't know if the replicas' material will have the same result. |

Sweet! I definitely prefer the matte finish.

Here's a link to the RPF build-up thread of my Sidkit Mal Reynolds, built by falcon dude (it's soft, pewtery metal):

And a couple photos of the completed pistol:

It can work very well indeed. I recently used Blue Wonder on a SidKit and it turned out exceedingly well.
I applied about 8 coats in total and between each coat I warmed the metal using a hair dryer so that it was hot - but not too hot to touch.
At the end I used the developer agent (this brings out the color) and as it was drying, I rubbed in a ground up (very soft) graphite pencil, which deepened the color even more and gave it a slightly richer luster..
The overall effect is very satisfying but it can't work as well as it would on steel though because the gold and silver particles contained in the chemical normally create a rust on the metal surface (that's the process of chemical based blueing), but to my eye the fact that the end result is a brown hue - rather than a blue hue - on the pewter makes the blaster look more worn as opposed to being brand new..... |
