Thank you thank you....

I didn't know that before but the artdept on Aliens used Humbrol 170 aka Brown Bess as a base color, which was then matched and mixed in large batches for the dropship and APC. This Humbrol color is rare as it's out of production. So i was lucky when i got these in the mail yesterday.

Small update:

Body masterpattern is nearing completion. Filled the top chamfers/corners along the length of the body on both sides, did those by hand, no cnc there. Fitted the new side nose corners. I have since completed the driver window section.

Right side. Chamfers filled. Nose corner fitted. Missing a small corner there on the top. The holes for both the main access door and the grille / vent behind the door have since been cut out.

Driver window insert + cnc cut 1.0mm acrylic windows. Acrylic still has protective film on top. Window frame still needs rivet detailling.

Reverse side. The frame is 1.5mm thick, but the reverse has a 1.0mm deep slot, so the windows fit in perfectly. From the front it then looks the frame is only 0.5mm to the window, without loosing integral strength.

More pics later.

Cheers,

Wasili

Thanx for the kind words guys,

Time for pics updates. Here's the first one. I redid the rearend. Of all the parts, this one was way off. There's only one good shot from the rear (when the marines exit the APC at the colony, high rez still in Cinefex issue), as opposed to the 3/4 rear shot i had used to do the previous rearend.

Here's the new basic shape, with ventilation panes. Holes for ladder are already in place. The two longer parts have steps machined into them so all the panes position perfectly.

Steps in place. There's two different sizes in vent panels, each machined from 1mm styrene. The lower backside is machined down to 0.35mm thick to give the impression it's a thin panel.

Panels in place. No glue here. Looks thin, doesn't it ?

comparison with old part. Way off. Can hardly believe that went through my fingers. The new part is also 0.75mm wider.

More soon.

Cheers,

Wasili

Thanx Joberg and Jt. And Jt, if you need more info on the cnc, let me know.

update:

main access door.

From top to bottom:
Guide rail cover / springsteel bar / door / lower rail guide / rail guide supports.

Although not visible here, the lower rail guide has a profile that perfectly fits the body, and a top ridge over which the door can slide. Each kit has a machined rail from styrene. Stronger than a cast one, and safes you the trouble of taking the flash off.

The top rail cover fairing is machined as i type this.

close up of door handle. Here it's lose, not glued. Each handle is machined from styrene. 0.5mm thick, and no cleanup necessary.

More soon.

Cheers,

Wasili

Hello folks,

Update:

Redid the driver window. My earlier version was very close, but i did cut out the radii from the router in the corners, only to find out there are even bigger radii in reallife. So machined another window, still here without rivets. Old on top, new on bottom of pic.

From top to bottom:
New parts for new main gun barrels (2.0)

Triangular parts are for the d-shackles on the nose.

Here's the parts for the front headlight 'chasm'. The panel with the two rectangular headlight cutouts is a seperate part. The chasm is deeper so you can put the headlight assembly in before adding the panel.

Armor blocks (for lack of a better word) on top. Pictured here is the right one.

Headlight reflector on the cnc. Here's the smoothing fase.

And after machining. You can see a small ridge around the top. This is were the headlight glass falls in. Still needs hole for LED and small bits for positioning the bar that runs along the front of the headlight. Unnoticeable on every pic i've seen before, but Harry's supersharp ref clearly showed it.

On the front there are two D-shackles. Made a simple 3d file, and machined them from styrene.

I machined two halves, here seen pushed together (no glue and before cleanup).

Finished D-shackle. Bolt on left. Bolt stil needs add on on left side. D shackles and bolts are seperate cast parts, and the bolt has a metal insert. sort of functional...well, sort of...

More soon.

Cheers,

Wasili

Oh man, That CNC machine is just awesome.... I was going to get a versalaser, but cost wise I think this is the better deal actually!

Ok guys, hope you like this. And yes, i was crazy enough to machine this. Nuts, you say ?

The nut is part of the towing point on the roof. Rest of the parts are here, all to be seperate cast parts. Bolt was shortened to correct length after pic was taken. The nut actually has a chamfered top, just like a real one.

Some of the details made in the past week. Many more done, and the list of stuff to do is getting really small.

Top row, from left to right:
- axle, still without pivot point
- front of new turret (with two rectangular chambers, for positioning of barrels)
- blocky bits of gun barrel, main turret
- bits that make up the front section of gun barrel

Lower row, left to right:
- (tiny) brass barrel of nose turret
- 4 details for truncated base of nose turret
- reflector for side lights on nose
- details for roof: the towing point (pictured above) assembled without glue / handle / the two flat squares with flaps standing up. The bigger squares are glued on the body, and the smaller flaps are machined from 0.5mm styrene for each kit. Once again no cleanup. The squares already have slots so positioning of the flaps is easy and precise.

Much more soon.

Cheers,

Wasili

That is looking incredible... I agree with joberg.."nuts is right" this machine is incredible. I checked over the website, but the english part is not very complete, I will still order one, but need to have it shipped from an overseas distributor. THis has me sold on it....!

Thanx guys,

it's the details that make this fun. So why indeed not go nuts on it.

Update:
The rebuild of the masterparts is done except for one essential bit, namely the rubber tire. Based on all the ref i made a 3d file and had an outside contractor machine this from renshape. Unfortunately the one they machined was done with a too large dia bit, so the important grooves/profile got skipped. Basically useless. I don't want to go with another supplier, so i'll do it myself.

But couldn't resist and tweaked the 3d file a bit. Here's a simple 3d rendering of the tire (Rhino 3d with VRay renderengine). I've broken this into machinable pieces, which go on my cnc machine from monday.

The APC wheel has 14 panes stuck on the outer rim, blocking half of the deep grooves on the side of the tire.

More soon.

Cheers,

Wasili
