Thank you guys for your comments and analysis, it's always interesting to read your thoughts and/or reactions to my own analysis !

A little out of place detail a friend of mine saw in Russel Crowe's Almost Famous : This scene takes place in a early 70's San Francisco street... but look at the Obey Giant poster at the left on the image... A typical example of Obey's late 90's work !

A little update on this, the Original "Obey" street art was done by Shepard Fairey, the guy that did the now iconic Obama "Hope" poster. The face was made from Andre the Giant, and where the "Giant" came from. His work has been copied by others around the same time period as both spoof and homage, and not all of the Obey Giants were made by Shepard. It is still his creation that now has a life of it's own, and also along with Banksy, made stencil street art so popular now days.

Andy.
Thanks for posting that!
This one is strange coincidence.
The image that this guy is holding I'd seen before.....

I've been looking for or even trying to draw (But gave up)
The reason was because I saw it on "Cal McAffrey's" wall in State of Play.

It's funny where these things turn up.

Thank you Andy for your link on Shep Fairey's bio, I should have done this to explain who he is (it's so obvious for me that I almost forgot it wouldn't be for some people here so again, thanks a lot for taking the time to explain and post a link).

Neil, no need to draw the Andre sticker form this screencap (yes, it's the same State of play OBEY / Andre the giant art than the one seen in Almost Famous)

This sticker is 6" x 7", here is mine... and the good news is that you can purchase one for 3$ directly from Obey's site !

Look here :

http://obeygiant.com/store/product.php?productid=56

cheers !

Fred

PS : lol JB !

Good people,

I have not been here in a while, so, hello, again! Very Happy

This discussion is fascination. Here is something that I have not seen mentioned:

As Deckard unpacks the VK machine, in Blade Runner, at the Tyrell building, what is he actually doing?:

He is pretending to move the VK, from the case, to the table. Razz Shocked

Old news Shawn...He did it that way, 'cause according to info from the people who worked on the movie, that VK was full of black powder (to make it more metal looking) and you couldn't touch it without leaving that powder on your hands or messing up the carefull work of the prop guys Wink

The VK was also attached to the table and had all the wiring run through the table. The screen may have been reverse projected, but I could be wrong on that. Even though they supposedly had two versions of this prop, both were working to some degree, and they didn't have the miniature screens we have now days. You also have probably seen what happens when you film a CRT screen and it isn't synced up with the film. You get the lines running through the picture. They also didn't have batteries that could have lasted a full day of shooting in 1981 the way we do now. It would have needed to be hard wired.

Somewhere we have a link to a clip of the scene in question showing him "faking" the VK set up. I do find it funny that when what most people saw for the past 20+ years was the VHS tape and DC DVD, nobody really noticed this until it was shown on the theater screen again, and the newly restored cuts of the film on disc. Still the biggest surprise was seeing Adam Ant in the movie.

Adam Ant?...Really? Not to hi-jack the thread but could you "point him out?" I never heard this before...

BEST. THREAD. EVER!!!!!

So much of what's been posted here was floating around my head in fragmented, disassociated pieces for so many years - THANK YOU Fred & all for defragging my head!

And if I may add to Neil's solar sail post, the rear sail from the ISV Venture Star in AVATAR:

Excuse the quality, when I saved it in Paint it lost some of the quality Sad

As soon as I saw the "Solar Sailer" from Tron I immediately thought of Dooku's ship from AOTC.

Here is some info from the Tron Wiki site....

Quote:
We see that this vessel is a simulation of a futuristic spacecraft,
designed for travel in the Real world using solar energy, with an
enormous metallic sail to catch the rays of sunlight like wind, and
move with the speed of light. The sail is at the bow of the craft,
and a long, slender walkway connects it with the deck area, which is
made up of several connected flattened box-shapes, giving it the
look of a dragonfly. In this world, the Sailer catches data
transmission beams instead of sunlight, and is propelled along the
information paths to the Central Processing Unit.

Good find Darren...as for the "sail design" for space ship, even NASA had designs like these in the '70s and '80s. (now is a good time for a Google search Wink )

Oh, NASA's had solar sail concepts published since the early 70s, as well as preliminary space station concepts (then called SOPs = space orbital platforms) during the infant phases of the Space Shuttle Program, while the Skylab project was still active. Here's an early artist concept from 1974:

Solar "sails" have several purposes:

1. propulsion: harness the sun's photon stream to achieve solar system escape velocity before nuclear engines kick in

2. micrometeorite protection: act as the "first line of defense" against cosmic dust. This has been around since the Apollo program (the LM was covered in gold mylar to protect sensitive mechanisms).

3. heat shield: just as Skylab used a reflective "sail" to protect the crew habitation module when one of the solar panels failed to deploy and power the air conditioning system, requiring other means to prevent the module from overheating

To pick up Andy's point regarding the VK machine , all the screens were TV camera monitors the larger one was a studio monitor the two smaller one's were from cameras, I can't absolutely confirm it but I am led to believe they were Sony's , they were hardwired to 1/4inch Betamax players and routed up through the desk. There never was a portable unit that worked, ( which is why HF mimed taking it out of the case and setting it up. Both Holden's and Deckards started off as the smaller unit ( with a smaller main monitor ) we seen in some screenshots . For the closeups a 'new' larger monitor , was built and fitted to the smaller unit and those scenes were filmed later . The tape loops employed were a filmed loop of Sean Young's eye ( although there is some argument about this) and two background displays from Alien. (Has anyone identifed which scene they are from ?)
