|
|
My conception after the first viewing was this: 6 replicants had made
it to earth, 3 males and 3 females; 1 male and 1 female had been
zapped by the Tyrell Corporation sheilds, the other 4 had to be
retired; they reprogrammed the female that had been zapped with new
memories to make her believe she was a human to see if it would work;
when it did, they reprogrammed the male to believe he was a blade
runner and sent him after the other 4. When he realized that Rachael
was a replicant he began to suspect that he was too; when he found the
unicorn, he knew it was true and decided to leave with Rachael.
Okay, nothing new so far, BUT..... The original 6 came to earth
because they knew that their 4 years were almost up and they would die
soon. I assumed that Gaff let Deckard and Rachael go because he knew
that they would die soon anyway and now that they were reprogrammed
they were harmless. I have just googled around to many sites
and read many opinions on BR and I have not once seen anyone mention
that they are going to die shortly after Gaff let them go. Hasn't that
occured to anyone? |

Hmm. That's a good take. Thanks for posting. Kind of a dark ending, but I like it. |

I really like this idea... it's very poetic and I salute you for mentioning this, jffdvs...
But to address your question of "Hasn't that occured to anyone?", I think it's also pretty cool to note that it does seem to have occurred to Deckard at the end of the Voice-Over Version:
"I didn't know how long we'd have together. Who does?"

Given the ambiguity about Deckard being a replicant, and the limited life span, how much time is really on his clock? a few years? a few months? less?
I don't get the feeling Gaff would've let him run if his clock had a lot of time left on it. _________________

Depends on which version you watch.
From wiki:
Quote: | The theatrical cut's voiceover ending said that as an experimental replicant Rachael didn't have the pre-determined four-year lifespan, but the Director's Cut left that ambiguous. |

Whatever version you watch. Tyrell says that "Rachael was an experiment, nothing more." So put aside the narration even.
That line plants the idea that she was different then the others, we know she had these gifted memorys. I doubt Tyrell stopped there.
No lifespan limit on her for instance would surely be a possibility.
As for Deckard as replicant. there is too much awkwardly fitting conspiracy needed to make Deckard as replicant work.
The elegence of implying it lightly is to make us question ourselves. More then that, the story loses all elegence..
So no, they do not die in my view.
Also Gaff, who has been a royal azzhole through this whole flick. Shows some humanity by letting them go, or as much as he is capable of.
There is elegence in that, this background character also becomes transformed as the other characters did. |
