Can't wait to see the Steel Barrel!

Yes, I suppose the smart thing would have been to machine the replacement barrel first, then hack off the plastic one but what the heck!

I love the guts of a certain bunch of people on this board, specially those working with metal, files, hack saws and generaly nasty machines

Wow Dave, pretty brave of you to start transforming that kit...I guess the wine (beer for Oz) is to get the courage to do so (love it btw Very Happy ).
Eager to see the next step!

"A nip of the ol' courage" !!!

and it's off to shop.... Honestly, I love having my machines.
I am forever messing w/ stuff.
To me it's all about getting it "just right". And knowing I can do it.
I spend days. Planning, making fixtures, doing research, waiting for
tools to show up in the mail.
& after all that. I'm more excited then scared anymore.
I take my time, and make sure I have all my ducks in a row.

... and BAM! I make myself happy. (then I get to work) Shocked

Okay, here's the prototype for the steel barrel for the Tomen.

3mm and 6mm tapped holes for the mounting bolts. The bore of the barrel is drilled about 1 1/2" deep. Plenty deep enough to go to black.

I slotted the breach end twice, to try out different tooling, only one slot is necessary to fit around the flat bar cast into the frame. Originally I had thought that the slot could help register the barrel in place, rotationally, but the flat bar isn't perfectly horizontal in mine so the slot will be slightly over size to allow for adjustment.

I like to look of the steel barrel!

And blued...

Hey, has anyone dis-assembled their Pro (the previous finished version) to see if the barrels are molded to the frame like the kit? what little I can see if the joint between the barrel and the frame it looks like they are but I can't tell for sure, and I don't want to take mine apart.

I inadvertently broke the rules over at the RPF by posting about something for sale in the wrong place and I don't want to get in trouble over here too. So I'll while I'll continue to post progress pics of my steel barrel here, I've moved all sales discussions over to the Prop Shop.

If you;ve already PM's that you are interest in a steel barrel there is no need to do so again, but you should subscribe to the Prop Shop thread for sales updates.

Here's prototype number two for the steel barrel. It's amazing what a difference sharp tooling makes! This is straight off the lathe, no additional filing, sanding or polish.

I didn't have the time to do the threaded holes or slot but will in the next couple of days.
