NO it means you need to remove all bluing and or black finish to get a film accurate finish, a nice polished bare metal finish and then if you want to go the extra step use some dulling finish to get the dull gray steel look seen within the film and on the real prop as found at worldcon by Karl.
One problem and most likely why they went with the black finish is that they HAD to make the pistol and barrel out of plastic and getting a matching bare metal finish is harder with plastic, so black plastic with a black Steyr made better cost sense.
My 2 cents worth.

Lots of interesting information surfacing about the finish on the gun. I find it exciting to hear people debating details again. Things really slowed down once the original was found.
I haven't studied the film as carefully as some members here. However, I don't agree that the gun was bare metal in the film. I'm not a fan of the latest finish either. To me, it looks to be a semi-glossy black / metallic color.
That's the great thing about so many different kits. Ultimately, we all get to own what we want in a Blade Runner blaster. I for one am thrilled to have the previous version of the Tomenosuke. I'm perfectly happy with the finish I achieved. Nice dark grey on the receiver, slightly lighter trigger and trigger guard and silver butt plate. I'm not a fan of the bright chrome ones. But to each their own tastes.

It puts to rest the talk about it being blued.

LOL.
I love you Rich. But the gun was Blued maybe not 100% remaining probably like 70-75% but it was not not stripped down to bare metal either.
Blueing has transparency that lets metal show through it especially with the added power of film lights.
AN example we know this gun that was used and sold at auction was blued but it looks lighter and grey in this particular shot.
Not sure why Deckard is wearing that hat BTW. |

Sorry but to my very good eyes it was gray silver, not bright but dulled for filming, all the shots where it appears blued or black was a factor of the lighting on the film and darkening the film in the lab.

Great picture there Stonedog7563. And thanks for bringing it to the RPF Spinner44.
I tend to agree, however, with Hirohawa on this one. I see blue/grey not bare metal.
I don't know that it will ever be settled to everyone's satisfaction. I do know that I like the finish I achieved on my own blaster. Meanwhile, the discussions are always interesting and enlightening.

The gray I totally agree with, I am not sure if it was age or a dull coat, but I still see gray/faint silver in almost ever shot.
Again gray is right, and I know how much light reflections are a BIG problem on sets (having been on a few myself) I am sure it had some kind of dulling done to it.
I believe that is what turned a metal color to a duller gray.
But a blued gun would read much darker.
Rich
PS The old pistol has almost all of its bluing worn off. _________________ I never have enough time to do all I want to do! |

I too have been on a movie set - you don't think all those porta-pottys get there by themselves do you. Why dull the receiver but not the grips cylinder covers and ammo housing?
Definitely has some grey peeking through. But so does Worn off blueing.
ALso this is not a stripped gun as to my original viewpoint. The Hero Receiver has blueing on it as delivered to set. Notice how the color and highlights are the same as the black alloy Socket bolts. No way they would register the same.
No matter how dark the photo is Unblued stripped steel (in the white) would show up a lot lighter.

I personally believe that Scott understood a properly blued gun would be almost opaque with his intended lighting and exposure. I think he wanted it to still look like a blued gun so he "cheated" the prop by stripping the bluing to make it look proper after post. I believe it's supposed to look like a blued gun.
I'm often torn between looking for the gun of the film or a replica of the prop.
With that in mind the Coyle gun is as close as you can get to the actual prop.
Interestingly, the latest Tomenosuke represents neither the idealized blued gun nor an accurate prop replica. |

I think we will have to agree to disagree lol
While this pic is fantastic and the best and only available of the gun previous to filming, there's a lot of contrast in it, colors are not accurate (grip is too yellow, not orangish, the black parts are absolute black.. even the buttplate instead of alumnium looks like steel, that is much darker as you know... |
