Shapeways is okay, certainly their prices are about the best you're going to find. But the trade off is spotty quality control. Their business model is to cater to the mass public, most of whom wouldn't know good 3D printing from bad. Recently their quality has been really good, no complaints. These parts for my blaster are top notch. But about a year ago I had an order of over $2,000 of architectural model parts come out that were complete s**t. It took almost two weeks to reach someone that could do something about it. They grudgingly agreed to reprint the parts, although they never admitted there was anything wrong with them. But again, no problems these days and they seem to have pretty good tech support response. _________________ Dave

Here's a set of grip castings. The next step will be to cut the checkering.
A test assembly with the grip castings and the new 3D printed parts.

Cutting the checking with the CNC router.
Actually these grips are rejects, not because there was anything wrong with the cuts, but when I looked at the cut surfaces under a magnifying glass I discovered that the resin had foamed ever so slightly when it cured developing thousands of tiny little bubbles. The cast surface was fine but when the vee bit cut through it exposed them. I could probably solve the problem by pressure casting a set of blanks but I'll just get some new resin.

Here's the hero set of grip patterns with the checkering.
I'm also experimenting with some other checkering patterns. Here's a wavy pattern:
and a square grid pattern:

Never thought about the different checkering you could do
Very interesting and, for us, more options available (Lord knows the variations are now into the dozens!) |

More checkering variations. Here a rounded slot pattern:
And the same pattern but cut with a V shaped bit:
And probably my favorite from this bunch, cut with a ball end mill:

I turned the receiver bolt from acrylic on the lathe and then used a ball end mill to add the sounded depression.
Here it is inserted into the receiver.

You sure do know how to design some cool grips. All else fails you could go into business as a company that makes grips for real firearms and I bet you'd make a mint.

I'm planning on incorporating the Goldberg Arms logo into the grips. First pockets are milled out in the grips. The logos are 1/2 inch in diameter and were printed on my 3D printer. Then inserted into the pockets.

Thanks!
I had hoped to get the kits out in time for the holidays but at this point I doubt I'll make it. More likely early in the new year. _________________ Dave

Gosh, I love how this blaster is coming along. Count me in for one, please!
Have you considered doing this pattern horizontally?
Cheers,
Jens

Actually I'm thinking about reducing the scale of the pattern a bit and angling it a little to run alo g the length of the grips. _________________ Dave
