I'm on a quest boys and girls, to ID the sight rod. Unless it's been done and I missed it.

Shocked

I thought it would be nice if we had a sight rod thread for research photos, and discussion.

I know that screwdriver handle has been tossed about and I think that's a logical jumping off point for OUR research.

Thoughts, ideas, comments are welcome.

Noeland,

For some reason some type of dental tool keeps coming to mind. I really wish I could retain information better!

I do a bit of leather work and the sight rod looks very much like a leather hole punch.

I actually bought a new punch at a local craft store because it reminded me of this piece of the Blaster. It was short though and had a few different screw on tips for making different sized holes...I figured I could ream it out and mount leds on it to use on my Snubby. Ever tried to ream out hardened metal?
It didn't work so well.

I have read that the sight rod was a jeweler’s screwdriver; I initially thought it resembled the drafting lead holders I used back before AutoCAD and computers revolutionized the industry. Upon reviewing the close up photos, I now believe it is a machinist’s double ended scribe. My father was a machinist and I seem to remember his having a similar designed tools for laying out patterns on blued metal surfaces. A hole punch would have a relief cut in the side of the shaft to remove the cutouts and the pictures clearly indicate that the shaft is double ended which I believe would rule out a punch. I did a quick search on the web and this is as close as I could get (bottom). I would think that the scribe has been out of production for some time and most likely very difficult to obtain an exact duplicate. I also belive a old style dental pick with removeable tools might be a match.

Did you they heating the punch red hot and letting it slowly air cool? This should remove the heat treatment and allow you to ream the punch but you are still fighting the high carbon content of tool steel. Also I don't think the sight rail is a punch because there isn't a smooth tapered end to cut material. The photos show knurling to the very tip which would additionally indicate a chuck of some kind to hold a tool scribe or pencil lead.

I think we have to set aside what was claimed in the past, and try to ID things ourselves with what we now know.

Obviously none of the "experts" on the Blade Runner gun had even seen it in person (since I was the first one to see it in person, in 2006).

Any prior information is based on screen caps, guesswork and faulty 20-year-old memories.

Sounds like it is time to fire up the Google monster yet again!

Karl, do you remember if it was hollow. I honestly cannot recall from any of the previous postings if this was mentioned.

Thanks!

Tom

I did searches for this too, but couldn't think of what to call it. Thank you, since this is also something I remember from my Grandfather's basement and he was a machinist I think you may have hit the nail on the head.

I could not tell from looking at it if it was hollow. I kind of got the idea that it MIGHT be hollow, since there are LEDs at both ends, and wires that seem to come down from it.

I couldn't tell if it was metal or not. Actually I don't think I even wondered about it at the time. So it wasn't obviously NOT metal I guess.

Logically though, I think if it was any kind of fragile plastic, it would have broken off at some point. IE when Deckard climbs the wall and drops it near the end of the film.

A piece of evidence to support the "it's metal" theory, would be that it seems to be covered with scratches, revealing gray or metal color beneath the paintl.

Here BTW is the superest macro close up of the sides of those two tiny screws that stick out next to the white wires.

Man that really looks like there might be some numbers or words in that front 'mill groove'.
