So I'm trying to work on the computer model for the .38 Special but my cat had other ideas!
But she finally went to sleep. Blasters for her pillow.

Carefull with those cats Dave: they're aliens trying to take on the world
Joke apart, I can see that you've made some headway with that 3-D rendering...cannot wait to see the results, but also the build |

Working on refining the design of the .38 cal. Detective Special. The concept is that it is basically built on the same frame as the .38 cal Snub Nose but with a longer barrel, larger capacity ammo mag and a larger, full handed grip. this will allow the reuse of several of the same patterns from the Snubby. Plus additional accessories, like a suppressor or targeting system will fit both blasters.
The grip portion of the frame will be cast with openings as shown. They can be filled with weights to give the resin blaster a bit more mass, or left open for a look reminiscent of the hero blaster.
The kit will be cast in more parts, in particular the side covers will be separate castings from the frame. This will allow for a hollow opening in the fame underneath the covers for the addition of weights for resin castings, or to reduce weight in the case of a metal version. Though it's not yet shown, the Detective Special will include the LED sockets and switch in the clip, and there should be plenty of room for electronics.

Well it's been awhile but it's time to drag this project back up to the front burner!
The receiver, clip housing and clip patterns are done and ready for 3D printing. The clip is set up for 5 LEDs. Wiring up a battery and circuit in there will be tight but it can be done!

Very cool! Put me down for at least one. Mind if I ask what software you used, and what printer? Very nice execution on the model. |

I use Rhino for 3D modeling. Very powerfull and flexible software.
I have a 3D printer I built myself that uses a DLP projector to cure a photopolymer resin, very high resolution. I'll use it for the smaller parts. The larger part I'll send to Shapeways. _________________ Dave

The pattern for the frame and block forms of the grips were milled out of 40 pound urethane foam on my CNC router. I'll finish up the shape of the grips the old fashioned analog way... with files, rasps and sandpaper.
