|
|
I've started to build a Voight-Kampff machine (VK). As a conceptual start I've used Lego to give some hints on if I get the size and construction right.
I used LED arrays from Kingbright as input for the size. That was for the red 10 LED array and the green-red 12 LED array.
Compare the work done by @MarcusKirsch here: Voight Kampff Test - UK - german built
Other main references for my machine were the pictures on these forum pages:
And of course the movie... (Blade Runner)
And here a picture comparing my build with one of the deleted scenes from
"Blade Runner (Complete Deleted Scenes/Lost Footage)" on YouTube https://youtu.be/7xBKrz0wdsM
As this is Lego, you can determine the width of my machine. Do you accept the challenge? _________________ No artificial animals were harmed in the production

The Lego approach is a new one for me might be the solution to get the right size |

I'm now happy with the size after comparing with this photo.
I also found the original photo useful when finding the height of the VK feet. This height should be half the distance between the base and its reflection.
The reflection was also useful when I placed my thumbs, I found that the thumb tips are aligned with the back edge of the machine.

I made a first version of a VK font. You can check it out here:

I've only tested the Mac version. Only upper case letters have glyphs. I worked extensively with kerning. What do you think?

Thank you Joberg.
I played around with fonts a bit more and created a monospace font for the two small screens. This is based on the two YouTube clips posted by Anders Buch:
I couldn't post the text in monospace here (the code tag doesn't do it). So these are images.
The left screen:
GRID PLASMA FLD QUAD SR3
RATE
DRIFT
The red row moves up and down, while the red text "0277 3R9" flashes.
The right screen:
INERTIAL DAMPING NUL G
J66543 M2 T70007 AL 55436

|
|
Some electronics ready, the 10 red and 12 green-red LED arrays.
I made this clip, comparing my sequencing with the movie. It is at 50% speed to last a bit longer, the total length of the movie reference is only 26 seconds.
I think I got the timing right, there is some smoothing between the different clips added. One thing I noted was that the last two red LEDs of the ten are never shown lit.
I haven't found any correlation between the two LED arrays. Any creative ideas on what they measure? _________________ No artificial animals were harmed in the production |

|
|
Thanks again Joberg, glad you liked it.
I find the Deckard Voice Over interesting. Here is my transcript from the Rachael test in the deleted clip:
I don't remember if it made it to the movie, but it gives some background.
Quote: | Deckard (Voice Over):
It was always a thrill running a Voight-Kampff on a known human being. All you get is zero-zero-zero.
Just to humor the big shot I ran 62 questions in the Omega series, 28 in the Colman series.
And I was coming to the end of the Cumming cross reference when I got a cold chill down my spine. | I'm not sure if I got the terms "Omega", "Colman" and "Cumming" right...
You wonder what the thrill with a 0-0-0 result is, perhaps you don't expect it during the test.
The following dialogue we know as:
Quote: | Deckard: She's a replicant, isn't she?
Tyrell: I'm impressed. How many questions does it usually take to spot one?
Deckard: I don't get it Tyrell.
Tyrell: How many questions?
Deckard: Twenty, thirty, cross-referenced.
Tyrell: It took more than a hundred for Rachael, didn't it? |

|
|
I'm comparing the screen clips used on the close-up shots (earlier post) with the lower machine used with the actors. This is about the best I can get, but they differ quite a bit:
They don't change much in the three clips (total 16s) during the Leon test.
- Both smaller screens have a dark background.
- The left small screen has some increasing animation on it.
- The right small screen seems static.
- The larger screen with the eye appear to be in black and white, and it only has slight movement.
I think I will stick with the close-up clips for my lower-version machine.
I also noted, while walking through the scene frame-by-frame, that Holden has his blaster in his hand for a few frames after he has been shot. That was new to me, and I wondered if this was known by the community. I found that Joberg posted that in 2009 here:

Yes, the Holden gun is still in his hand when going through the screen and hitting the table. |
